Did you know that children who have spent time in foster care are 3.5x more likely to experience PTSD like that of a war veteran? Placement stability is an integeral part of helping mitigate the affects of trauma children in the foster care system experience. Once healthy stability is achieved, children can begin the process of learning how to form healthy trust-based attachements. This is vital to their healing journey. Keeping sibling groups together, whenever possible, is a monumental part of lessening the overal impact that the trauma of removal can cause for a child. Think about it, even if a child is in a desperate situation and removal is a necessary, they are still being ripped away from all that is familiar to them. For children, routine and control are two extremely important components for healthy development. When children are able to enter into the unknown space of the Child Welfare System and navigate it with their sibling, the trauma that comes with removal can have less severe lasting affects. They have eachother and intimate connection and that gives them a sense of control and safety. I am so excited to see that Christian Bale has discovered this reality and has a passion to help make it possible for siblings to remain together during foster care placement.

Today's P&O Australia memory comes from a 2012 video that describes their partnership with Save the Children. I've spent many hours pondering travel privilege and the role that colonialism has played (and continues to play) in our world. During lockdowns, my colleagues in the Australian Society of Travel Writers held a webinar with the ChildSafe Movement that spoke of the risks to children through some tourism practices and what we can do as writers, communicators and travellers to help stop this exploitation. Voluntourism and other well-intentioned actions from visitors, without a deep, nuanced, in-Country understanding of true local needs and issues can, unfortunately, do more damage than good. Now, watching this video again, I am even more acutely aware of the value of P&O's decision to work with Save the Children (and the Vanuatu Ministry of Health) and the very necessary and appropriate hoops my crew stepped through to make it happen. There is a lot in the background of this video. Filming or photographing anyone, anywhere, without permission can be an invasion of privacy, and in travel, can so often become exploitative and unethical. Every child who appeared in this video had signed approvals from their parent or guardian and my crew went through strict background checks and completed training with Save the Children before leaving Australia and prior to filming in Vanuatu. How our story telling & community agreements have an effect on our trust building efforts.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending an Open Doors event at the West Scarborough Neighbourhood Community Centre. It was a fabulous event where the community had a chance to celebrate with each other as well as enjoy some yummy treats! It was also an opportunity to discuss the upcoming National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Witnessing traditional indigenous dance and drumming and listening to the speaker talk about the idea of the medicine wheel - sage, cedar, sweetgrass and tobacco made me reflect our history as a country but also my own faith traditions. One of our core tenants of justice is "stand up for truth, even if it's against yourselves (your family, your tribe, your group)". To me, this is the litmus test for your commitment to the idea of truth. It sounds simple enough but so difficult to practice consistently, especially when you perceive the stakes to be very high. Standing up for truth seems to be a no-brainer but if the impacts of doing so adversely affect your world view, business, job, reputation or power, what then? I sometimes ask myself this question in the context of my business. Despite what appear to be the facts, am I holding on to old ideas because "we've always done it this way" or to protect some other dogma or idea I have about myself or my past? I'm not pretending to be an expert this subject nor did I ever study it in depth, but when I think about the history of indigenous peoples in Canada, i feel that we have adopted the stance of "stand up for the truth, except if it's against yourself". In recent years, there has been more of a willingness for our leaders and institutions to take a close hard look at the question of truth. Heck, we even have a national day for it now. Today, Indigenous peoples represent approximately 5% of the population of Canada but 32% of people in custody and 30% of children in foster care. While the truth about things like residential schools and the 60's scoop are now being talked about openly, we can see the legacy of not only their impacts through intergenerational trauma but also the systemic biases still at work today. While the conversation about truth seems to have started, the journey toward reconciliation seems to be a long way off. #westscarborough #truthandreconciliation #community #managedIT

Inside the Favela Morro Dos Prazeres. This picture was taken in the favela of Morro Dos Prazeres, Where our Give Back School is making a difference. This favela, like many others in Rio de Janeiro, is a place of contrasts. → The constant threat from drug gangs,  → Casting a shadow over daily life.  → Safety is a daily concern, and  → The lack of basic needs is a harsh reality for all residents. Yet, despite these challenges, there is an undeniable beauty here. From the vantage point behind me,  The entire city of Rio unfolds in a breathtaking panorama. This view shows the paradox that defines life in the favelas. Amidst the danger and deprivation, there is a vibrant spirit, an infectious joy. → Children play with so much energy,  → Neighbors support each other, and  → There's a deep sense of camaraderie. It’s a place where the struggles are real, But so are the connections and the celebrations of life. As we continue to support and improve the operations of our Give Back School, We remain inspired by the incredible strength and spirit of this community.
