There are $10.7 billion in energy grants accepting applications today across federal, state, local, and private funders. As we approach two years from the signing of the Inflation Reduction Act, state agencies have begun to disseminate federal funds to private entities, complimenting the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s direct grantmaking. On February 4, 2011, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced the #SunShot Initiative, an ambitious technological challenge (and funding) for technologists to reduce the total costs of #solar energy by 75% by the end of the decade. By September 2017 — three years earlier than expected — the SunShot Initiative had achieved its cost target of $0.06 per kilowatt hour for utility-scale solar. The program was such a success that the DoE has gone a little "Shot crazy." There are currently eight active #Earthshot initiatives designed to speed the transfer of basic research to market. This issue of Energy Today surveys four of them. The fifth article looks at an alternative pathway. AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles, a 35-acre ocean technology campus, will add wave energy pilot stations, including Eco Wave Power’s first U.S. onshore wave energy pilot station. AltaSea has also established a coalition of over 30 wave and tidal energy companies to help showcase the technology's potential in California. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), a federally funded research and development center sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, found wave and tidal energy has the technical feasibility to supply 30% of the energy needs of the U.S. The NREL report also found California’s outer continental shelf has the potential wave energy resources to power 13 million homes.
