The rise of renewables in our energy mix has a major obstacle: the power grid. Intermittency of wind and solar and the large number of distributed energy resources put enormous stresses on our outdated power systems. We are coming up to 30-40% energy from renewables, at which grid stability becomes an issue. Better grid connectivity, transmission and storage can all alleviate stresses but countries routinely revert to burning fossil fuels at peak times - highly counterproductive and expensive. Collecting data and predicting power supply and the demand on the grid will be game-changing. One exciting path forward are Virtual Power Plants which manage a diversified mix of energy resources to counteract lulls and surges. Other energy sources could fill in the gap. I am excited for ocean-based power from tides and waves. It was insightful to hear Sharon Chen at Climate Drift to speak about her take on the challenges and opportunities of this facet of the energy transition. The document in the article below provides a very good explanation why #gas and gas turbines are instrumental for achieving #energytransition and not only because I am a gas person! While renewable energy penetration has been growing rampantly over the past couple of years, sources like wind and solar cannot provide continuous energy generation, they also cannot cater well for extreme weather conditions. The renewables need to be supplemented with other energy sources. Peakers become essential for the variability and intermittency of renewable energy systems. It makes me very happy and proud that with #PLEXOS we can model this and other elements of energy systems holistically and effectively, co-optimising energy systems and incorporating their technical and economical parameters into one objective function. #plexos #energy #gas #power #renewables

Change the duck! 🦆 One of the most famous charts in the energy world is the ‘Duck Curve’. The term was coined in 2012 by the California 🏄♀️ independent System Operator. It demostrates the daily load and demand on the grid. As we approach noon 🕛 the curve deepens as solar systems take the load off the system. Then, when the sun sets solar is not effective 💰 and load increases. I challenge climate entrepreneurs to think 💭 in an ideal clean energy world how would you want this curve to appear? How does your energy storage solution or grid AI software could make this graph 📊deepen the curve and then flatten the graph towards the evening.
