JUSTICE has briefed all MPs and Peers on the importance of the UK's membership of the European Convention on Human Rights (the "ECHR"). We urge all those who support the ECHR to make their voices heard and ensure the importance of membership is more widely recognised.   The UK played a significant role in drafting the ECHR and has a leading role within the Council of Europe. Only two countries - Russia and Greece when it was a military dictatorship - have ever left the ECHR.   Withdrawal from the ECHR would: (i) endanger the Good Friday Agreement and Windsor Framework (ii) destabilise devolution; and (iii) harm international security cooperation.   The ECHR has significantly strengthened human rights protections across Europe and in the UK. There has never been a more important time for the UK to lead in the Council of Europe - supporting and promoting democracy, human rights and the rule of law across the continent.

The problem with Human Rights, is that they need support of the public and the public, in the United Kingdom and abroad, are on the receiving end of very high taxes, lower wages, increased utility costs, increased inflation, higher homeless and unemployment figures, overcrowded prisons, extreme public spending, high illegal immigration, constant berating and collective guilt for historical events and ever decronian laws - like the Online Safety Act, and it's foreign counter parts. All of these problems require commonsense solutions, but Human Rights legislation has been abused to the maximum to prevent such solutions occurring. Is it against human rights to deport rapists, murderers and illegal migrants to a less desirable part of the world? No. Of course it isn't. If you're a foreign national, and you commit crimes or enter a country illegally, you get sent back. The only people to blame for the public siding with withdrawing from the ECHR are the campaign groups and solicitors who keep pushing and pushing against the national and public interest.

The ECHR is to linked to the EU. However it will be interesting to see what it will do now the blowback of open borders and mass migration taking place in Germany, France, italy and Sweden is unfolding? You should be focusing more on the state of the courts and criminal system and it’s human rights failures in the UK?

As someone who has taught and researched extensively around this topic - and a long-standing justice member - I could not avoid commenting on this. I would simply ask people to read the Convention and form a view from those basic principles.
