As we kicked off the European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024 this week, I am thrilled to share a personal highlight from the opening festivities. The Estonian National Museum hosted three afterparties of the opening day to mark the beginning of this extraordinary year. We stand proudly as one of the main partners for #Tartu2024. Around 1 AM, I joined the crowd at the record launch party of Sigma, the drum and bass music legends, DJs from the UK. Their new record „London Sound“ was unleashed in Tartu. Dressed in warm winter clothes, the crowd danced in the night in the open air, oblivious to the cold and ice. Are there any professional takeaways from hosting this super cool night? Where do we stand? Are museums taking a step too bold into the realm of the night-time economy? I say, absolutely not too bold. Museums have been rewriting their narrative and embracing their role as not just preservers of history but as active contributors to contemporary culture for a while. But arguments often coming from inside out - increased visibility, revenue generation, and the ability to retain and attract visitors - are not good enough to continue doing that. The realisation hit me hard (again) on the very first day of Tartu2024. Our approach should not be based on seeing us as competitors but as potential powerhouses and leaders in the cultural and creative economy. The creative and cultural industries (CCIs), positioned at the intersection of various fields, are emerging as driving forces for innovation and socio-economic value generation. Museums are part of them. And not just. Because we embrace the social dimension better than many. Beyond hosting or initiating glittering events, and being an occasional feel-good venue, we should approach our roles as CCI organisations with a mission in building more connected and collaborative societies. When listening to the audiences, we align with the „social“ dimension of contemporary lives and empower citizens to experience, to reflect and to creatively influence democratic processes. Yet, from witnessing a dancing crowd to better understanding the ways that interacting with cultural and artistic spaces is about multidimensional engagement with the civic process, there is still some way to go. Thus, on Monday, I’ll continue to contribute to a large-scale project application to learn more about the civic in art, on a European scale. 🌙✨ #Tartu2024 #MuseumMagic #CulturalEconomy #EuropeanCapitalOfCulture

👉 Let's talk about a growing experiential industry trend! Illuminating cities. We're seeing an increasing popularity for light festivals in the US and beyond. That's right, they're not just for the holidays anymore! 💡 💡 💡 Older events like the Nuit Blanche in Toronto and Let's Glow in San Francisco have always been popular. The former first began in 2006 even. These types of art and light exhibitions are usually outdoor, walkable, interactive, and in urban spaces with public art. It's an amazing way to forge partnerships among municipalities and local organizations while bringing communities together to celebrate a city's vibrancy and uniqueness. The popularity of these experiences means cities and organizations are creating similar events outside of the holiday season. Think drone shows, projection mapping, lantern releases, mist and holograms on top of the usual light installations. We love this trend and how there is such public enthusiasm for it as well.
