Recent studies have shone a spotlight on the critical importance of #Wellbeing in Education. A 2023 WHO report revealed that 30% of adolescents globally struggle with their mental health, while teacher burnout rates have surged to 44% post-pandemic. However, schools prioritizing wellbeing have seen an increase in academic performance and a reduction in behavioral issues. These striking figures are prompting educators worldwide to shift their focus towards cultivating cultures of wellbeing. Excited to share insights from our #ARIS story at a recent workshop with lait foundation on Creating a Culture of Wellbeing in Schools. We interacted and shared best practices with 40+ educational leaders from top institutions in #Nigeria! 🇳🇬📚 🔑 Key points discussed: 1. Integrating mental health awareness and global citizenship into curricula. 2. Creating safe spaces for students to express emotions. 3. Implementing teacher wellness programs to prevent burnout. 4. Leveraging technology to achieve action plans. 🔑 Some takeaways for educators worldwide: 1. Go back to the basics- What are the needs of your community? 2. The goal should be to guide them through uncomfortable situations, allowing them to navigate negative emotions. It's essential to accept that feelings of being overwhelmed, nervous, embarrassed, or disappointed are all part of the human experience. However, the real concern arises when these emotions are left unprocessed and unaddressed. Educators need to know they don’t have to reward every good deed or answered question. Modern students have become accustomed to being rewarded for the slightest achievement, leading to a distorted sense of accomplishment. This behavior-centric approach often thwarts their ability to learn from failures and mistakes, crucial aspects of personal growth and development. The Power of Failure and Intrinsic Motivation Failure holds a vital lesson—it's a catalyst for innovation and improvement. Embracing failure instills the ability to approach challenges from different angles, fostering confidence and resilience. It's an integral part of development. Moreover, the reliance on external rewards conditions individuals to seek validation externally, undermining the intrinsic motivation that should drive them. Guiding Students Toward Resilience Parents and educators must allow students to navigate their natural developmental processes. The other side of discomfort is a place of empowerment, self-assuredness, and confidence. These are life skills that pave the way for success beyond the classroom. In conclusion, the path to overcoming back-to-school anxiety is through embracing discomfort and utilizing it as a catalyst for growth.
