Manufacturing of the barrel head The barrel head, like the body itself, is made of high-quality tight-grained sessile oak, seasoned for at least 24 months, naturally without glue. After the staves are selected, they are precisely cut to size and shape, and the planks are curved to fit the body of the barrel perfectly. A special mixture of water and wheat flour, which acts as a natural sealing material, is filled into the groove to fit the head of the barrel. Once the head has been inserted, the barrel takes its final shape, ensuring the airtightness and durability of the cask. We will soon publish a video on the process of inserting the barrel head. Are you curious, right? 😊 . #kadarhungary #cooperage #barrelmaking #barrelproduction #hungarianbarrel #barrelhead

New product: Family Era Barling’s Make Ye Olde Wood EXEXEL 313 T.V.F Pot Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates Barling and Sons was originally founded in 1812 by Benjamin Barling and began as a family business making silver-adorned meerschaum pipes. In the early 20th century, however, the Barling family began to produce what the brand is today most famous for – expertly made briar pipes. As we discuss in our Barling pipes dating guide on the main MBSD hub (with acknowledgements due for the research of historians Richard Carleton Hacker, Tad Gage, Jesse Silver, and Jonathan Guss), so-called “Family Era” Barling pipes, such as this one, are highly coveted by collectors. This is owing to their being made by the Barling family prior to the make’s acquisition by Imperial Tobacco Group, and Imperial’s decision to fire the family from the Barling factory. And, as is covered in the guide, there are ways to readily identify Barling pipes from this era. The arched “Barling’s” over “Make” nomenclature is one tell, and if a shape code is present, that will typically seal it. As this particular Barling has a three-digit shape code, it is a Family Era pipe, and a beautiful one at that. I’m most used to seeing Barling pipes in a more reddish-brown stain, but this one is dressed in a natural finish comparable to Dunhill’s Root. I assume the rationale behind this choice was much the same – excellent grain. The condition is excellent too. Despite its considerable age, there is little beyond some very minor, inner rim darkening to suggest its historic stature. https://nuel.ink/i0Mjac Details: Length: 6.5″ / 165.1mm Bowl Width: 1.12 / 28.44mm Bowl Depth: 1.35″ / 34.29mm Weight: 1.8oz / 52g 👉🏽👉🏽Pipe Link: https://nuel.ink/4lsgZz #pipesmoking #pipes #tobaccopipe #pipesmoker #pipetobacco #tobacco #smokingpipe #briarpipe #briar #smoking #pipemaker #pipecollector #artisanpipes #mbsd

New product: BBB Sovereign Smooth Bent Billiard Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked ‘BBB’ originally stood for ‘Blumfeld’s Best Briars’, so named after Louis Blumfeld after he took over the historic Alfred Frankenau Company in 1856. Later, the pipes came to be known as ‘Britain’s Best Briars’. Though the name might have changed, the quality of the pipes did not – they really were fantastic pipes, made in the classic style of the English-French shape chart. Like GBD, Dunhill, and Barling’s, BBB are pipes with a rich history behind them, proudly holding the title of “the oldest trade mark in the [pipe] industry.” From what I can tell, BBB’s Sovereign line was for blonde stained pipes, paired with black vulcanite stems. Lighter stains such as these are typically used on better blocks of briar, as they are far more transparent when it comes to grain quality and patterns. This one has plenty of beautiful, tight-knit bird’s-eye around its bowl, as should be expected. This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating to help with the break in process. The pipe also comes with its original box and sleeve. Details: Length: 5.4″ / 137.1mm Bowl Width: 0.77 / 19.55mm Bowl Depth: 1.58″ / 40.13mm Weight: 1.4oz / 40g 👉🏽👉🏽Pipe Link: https://nuel.ink/MVttzk #pipesmoking #pipes #tobaccopipe #pipesmoker #pipetobacco #tobacco #smokingpipe #briarpipe #briar #smoking #pipemaker #pipecollector #artisanpipes #mbsd

New product: Faaborg Flame Grain Large Brandy Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates Faaborg pipes were made by Viggo Nielsen, one of the godfathers of Danish pipe design and the founder of Bari, in collaboration with his sons Jørgen Nielsen and Kai Nielsen. After Viggo sold the Bari make in 1978, Faaborg served as an outlet for Viggo’s continued desire to produce hand made pipes, which he and his sons did well into the last years of Viggo’s life. It is hard to go wrong with a pipe from not one, but three masters of Danish pipe-making. This Flame Grain grade Faaborg from the Nielsens is testament to that; true to its designation, flame grain patterns cover its bowl and the sides of its shank, with pools of bird’s-eyes flowing on its underside and rim. The shape is a particularly large, half-saddle brandy, with plenty of room in its chamber for a good long smoke, whatever the blend. The condition is great. There’s some minor, inner rim darkening, and one or two small handling marks, but nothing I’d call concerning. The pipe is chambered for 9mm filters, though it would likely accommodate an adapter for non-filtered use if the next owner prefers. Feel free to us know if you’d like us to include one, on us. Details: Length: 6.6″ / 167.6mm Bowl Width: 0.81 / 20.57mm Bowl Depth: 1.87″ / 47.49mm Weight: 3.5oz / 100g 👉🏽👉🏽Pipe Link: https://nuel.ink/On2zC7 #pipesmoking #pipes #tobaccopipe #pipesmoker #pipetobacco #tobacco #smokingpipe #briarpipe #briar #smoking #pipemaker #pipecollector #artisanpipes #mbsd

New product: Family Era Barling’s Make YOW Straight Grain Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates Barling and Sons was originally founded in 1812 by Benjamin Barling and began as a family business making silver-adorned meerschaum pipes. In the early 20th century, however, the Barling family began to produce what the brand is today most famous for – expertly made briar pipes. This might just be the nicest Barling I’ve had the pleasure of selling (or, put otherwise, the nicest Barling I’ve had to say goodbye to). If you’ve read our guide to dating Barling pipes, you’ll know that this is a “pre-transition” or “family era” Barling, meaning it was made during the time that the Barling family both owned the Barling make and made Barling’s Make pipes. So, it’s a pipe made some time before the end of 1960 and, judging by the saddle stem, some time after the Barlings filed a patent for such in 1936. As evinced by the stamping, it’s not just a Barling with straight grain but a Straight Grain grade Barling, which was the highest grade during the family/pre-transition era. The condition is great, with just a little bit of darkening on the lip of the chamber and some finish fading on the rim. The stamping, for those interested, is as follows: BARLING’S (arched) MAKE YE OLDE WOOD T.V.F. STRAIGHT GRAIN and MADE IN ENGLAND Of course we want our customers to be the most informed out there, so we’ve written a comprehensive guide to dating Barlings. https://nuel.ink/EmAVWh Details: Length: 5.6″ / 142.2mm Bowl Width: 0.81 / 20.57mm Bowl Depth: 1.35″ / 34.29mm Weight: 1.6oz / 46g 👉🏽👉🏽Pipe Link: https://nuel.ink/d5h7Qt #pipesmoking #pipes #tobaccopipe #pipesmoker #pipetobacco #tobacco #smokingpipe #briarpipe #briar #smoking #pipemaker #pipecollector #artisanpipes #mbsd

After "fitting the skirt" by hand, comes the barrel-raising hoops, which is key to ensuring that the barrels are uniform in size and perfectly shaped. These tools are special because their strong, durable material is ideal for being involved in every step of the process until the final shape of the barrel is formed. As soon as the barrel shape is complete and has been toasted, the barrel-raising hoops are replaced by shiny, beautiful galvanised hoops. After testing, these are removed for polishing to prevent them from being damaged. Curious to know more about barrel production? New product: GBD Sable Colossus 9552 Smooth Calabash Estate Briar Pipe GBD was one of several prominent examples of a French pipe brand that, due to certain circumstances, became a maker most associated with classic ‘British’ pipes. Founded in 1850 by the French trio Ganneval, Bondier & Donninger, the brand was bought by English company Oppenheimer at the beginning of the 20th century, who opened factories in London and Paris to meet an increasing demand for the make’s high-quality and highly desirable pipes. Partly owing to the make’s inventive, yet traditional shapes, and partly due to the high standards of their production, GBD pipes are particularly coveted by collectors, as well as those who simply appreciate classic, well-made smoking instruments. Along with the Collector and Conquest series, the Colossus was, as can be imagined, a series for GBD’s larger than average pipes. While this one certainly isn’t a magnum-sized GBD, it does nonetheless have a relatively deep bowl, in part owing to its calabash-style shape. The grain on this one is particularly enjoyable, being covered in bird’s-eye patterns, along with some nice cross grain over its rim and underside. The condition is great. There’s some slight finish fading on the rim, along with a small amount of darkening on the inner lip of the chamber, but nothing significant to note. Details: Length: 5.6″ / 142.2mm Bowl Width: 0.93 / 23.62mm Bowl Depth: 1.98″ / 50.29mm Weight: 1.9oz / 56g 👉🏽👉🏽Pipe Link: https://nuel.ink/MFYoDj #pipesmoking #pipes #tobaccopipe #pipesmoker #pipetobacco #tobacco #smokingpipe #briarpipe #briar #smoking #pipemaker #pipecollector #artisanpipes #mbsd

New product: 1960s BBB Rare Grain 507 Smooth Dublin Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates ‘BBB’ originally stood for ‘Blumfeld’s Best Briars’, so named after Louis Blumfeld after he took over the historic Alfred Frankenau Company in 1856. Later, the pipes came to be known as ‘Britain’s Best Briars’. Though the name might have changed, the quality of the pipes did not – they really were fantastic pipes, made in the classic style of the English-French shape chart. Like GBD, Dunhill, and Barling’s, BBB are pipes with a rich history behind them, proudly holding the title of “the oldest trade mark in the [pipe] industry.” Pipe-makers like to extol the virtues of the quality of briar used in their pipes, and modern pipes are replete with claims as to how good the grain is on a particular model. This “Rare Grain,” on the other hand, from English make BBB, is more deserving of such a title. It is indeed not common to find factory-made pipes that have the level of consistency in their grain that this one does (though BBB in its prime was hardly just another factory). Its bowl is surrounded by consistent, vertical, straight grain and flame grain patterns, and even its shank has its own brilliant bird’s-eye gleam. Judging by the brass “BBB” rondelle and the stamping on the pipe’s sides, this would appear to be from BBB’s production prior to 1980, after which the make was absorbed by Cadogan Investments, like many others. The condition is great. There’s only one thing I will point out, that being the handful of scratches on the back rim of the bowl. The pipe comes with its original inner tube.
