According to Juniper Research, cellular roaming for low-power IoT devices is set to explode over the next five years. The report predicts a fivefold increase in roaming connections from NB-IoT and LTE-M devices, reaching 490 million by 2028, driven by increased bilateral agreements between mobile operators. This growth opens up new possibilities in supply chain tracking, connected cars, and smart city infrastructure. However, Juniper warns that carriers face challenges in accurately detecting and accounting for IoT traffic. To fully capitalize on this opportunity, operators need to invest in AI and machine learning for precise identification of IoT device connections, introducing premium billing based on network resources and time connected. Exciting times ahead as the cellular IoT roaming landscape evolves, offering both opportunities and imperatives for global carriers to adapt and capture value from this rapidly growing category. In revenue terms, the total IoT market (defined as including connectivity modules, value added connectivity, and core associated applications) in 2023 was worth USD335 billion, a figure which will rise to USD934 billion in 2033.
