From the beginning I think a lot of people in this town, including those who really respect Stuber, thought, "Gee, how hard is that: throw money at talent and watch them make original movies that can only be seen if you have a subscription to Netflix? And really, was it all that difficult to foresee that the real objective wasn't unique one-off movies, but series that keep customers tethered to that magical MRC. More than 5 years ago now I posted an opinion that Netflix should just buy Paramount. At the time Netflix was moving into a price new high rise in Hollywood and Paramount was floundering (pre-TOP GUN, pre-Par+). With Paramount there is an abundance of ever-green series content and plenty of IP still ripe for continual development (ie STAR TREK). That's the route I would have gone if I were Ted. But I'm not and now Netflix has a lot of fancy films that hardly anyone is ever going to watch. The other rub is that the Netflix Berlin wall approach against theatrical is self-defeating. I think Netflix would surprise itself if it purchased a small theater chain and started stunt releasing their series a week early on the big screen (for an added subscription, of course). Think a new episode every day for a week before you could watch it on Netflix. Hey, hold my popcorn...

The streamers have no interest in making movies. Their only interest is subscribers. This film will add to their library and gain new subscriptions as well as keep current subscribers happy with new fare. So they write off tens of millions to make their own content that just follows a format to raise their user base. That is hurting indie film, which is where all the innovation is. They are killing the golden goose by not supporting indie filmmakers. But to paraphrase a paraphrase: Filmmakers will out! Film has gone through many cycles in its hundred years plus. But each cycle was led by indies breaking the current mold. The powers that be, be it Studios or Streamers, then usurp the successful new model and eventually run it into the ground. At which time, the cycle repeats. The industry is currently face down in the dirt. Digging around for a way to rise up. It is time for the indies to save the day; again. It is time for the true creatives to assess the terrain and lead the industry to new ground and new hieghts. Doesn't seem any different from what Amazon/MGM Studios has been executing successfully in recent years with titles like Road House, Upgraded, and The Voyeurs. The post-pandemic theatrical landscape is primed for big IPs, audiovisual spectacles, awards contenders, and horror films. Mid-budget and high-concept star-driven originals—usually romantic comedies or action thrillers—are reliable eyeball-drawers that viewers are now habituated to consuming at home. Audiences never stopped watching them, they just stopped treating them like they were worth $12 a ticket plus a babysitter. Road House in particular demonstrated that you can eventify a streaming-only release with a proper multi-channel marketing spend, getting your star out in front of a lot of people, and centering one major release at a time. https://lnkd.in/dKtTTFPv
