Educator, systems thinker, partner and alliance builder for the future of a living Earth and human culture
In a polarized and fractured society, those who draw attention to the ecological devastation wrought by human activities, and those who champion the importance of protecting non-human life, increasingly face the label of being ‘anti-human.’ In this Frankly, I read a poem I wrote 20 years ago this month “The Lament of the Bigfoot” which highlights the disproportionate role humans have on the ecosystems they inhabit, and I reflect on how my attitudes have both changed and stayed the same 20 years on. Yes, the scale of the human enterprise has resulted in unprecedented harm to Earth’s biosphere. But separate from - and indeed as a result of - our past decisions, it is our actions today that will steer the future. Imagine how different that future might look if humanity harnessed its ingenuity and innovation to become active contributors, embedded within the web of life. Watch: https://lnkd.in/gbMvBZcr Is it possible to overcome 'the agenda of the gene'? And if so: how? And when? In what ways could humans actively enhance ecosystems by creating, rather than appropriating, biological productivity? And how might we reframe cultural and economic incentives to accelerate the shift towards an ecological civilization? Big open questions.

Transforming agriculture through innovation, dialogue & co-creation || Lead at Bayer's #LifeHubMonheim
Inspire or be inspired? What an afternoon with our fantastic postdoc community #EMERGE. Once a year our postdoc community get together to network, learn and develop as part of a really important group of researchers at Bayer. This year for the first time I had the opportunity to participate and share my experiences on "alternative career path" for scientists, and as much as I hope it was valuable for the postdocs, I have to say, it was a great experience for me. Seeing the aptitude, motivation and ambition of the next generation of scientific leaders in our organisation was really inspiring. I left the event feeling great about the future of research (and more)! So what did we talk about? 🔸 Transition from a "scientist" 👩🔬 to "not a scientist" 👩💼 - identity crisis? 🔸 Being a scientist, but without being THE expert - identity intact? 🔸 Why innovation in agriculture is so important #RegenerativeAgriculture 🔸 How #OpenInnovation can transform our business and society 🔸 Working as a chemist, at Bayer Foundation, and at #LifeHubMonheim Bayer Crop Science | Innovation Ecosystem Most important points (at least from my perspective): 🔹 If being a scientific expert is your dream, then go for it. Just know that your skills also open the door to many other possibilities. 🔹 Stepping out of the lab is not a waste of your training. Your skills, knowledge, and thought processes will be critical for everything you do in the future. 🔹 Even the "smartest" and "most knowledgeable" scientists need a team to have maximum impact. Communication is key: build your network and talk to people from outside your area about what you do. You never know what will come out of this! 🙏 A big thank you to Roksaneh S. for the invitation and the opportunity to meet old friends (including the inspiring Milana Trepetova Pengbo Beck, Denise Cibu and Carl-Christian Kolbe) and new (too many to mention but just a couple...Steven Abel, Line Beck, Adrian Merino Salomon and become a part of a community that will shape science at Bayer and beyond.

Supporting firms in transitioning from "Business as usual" to "Business at its best" within our planetary boundaries
I am looking for a new boss! Have you ever wondered which satellite imagery is best to detect GHG emissions from ecosystem conversion? Who should pay for regenerative agricultural projects on farms? And how a deforestation and conversion free commitment can be credibly included in the GHG reporting of big companies in the agricultural business? If you are interested in solving these questions at industry level, or if you even already know the answer to them, I think you would be a good match for the position https://lnkd.in/dZiefhww. Feel free to reach out if you would like to learn more about life at Quantis, how we drive businesses everyday to operate within the planetary boundaries, and how Quantis can drive you to grow professionally every day.

🚀 Exciting News 🦠🧫🧪🌳 Together with Marie and Selcuk, we're launching baCta, a synthetic biology startup revolutionizing the rubber industry! Rubber is a critical and irreplaceable raw material, present everywhere in our daily lives. But its production is not sustainable. The cultivation of Hevea rubber trees leads to massive deforestation, and synthetic rubber production emits huge quantities of CO2. Enter baCta! We produce high-quality, carbon-negative natural rubber using engineered micro-organisms and renewable feedstocks. We've made great progress over the past few months, and we have our first proof of concept. We're hiring for several roles; check out our job board! https://lnkd.in/eenne-jF I am absolutely convinced that synthetic biology isn't just an option—it's a necessity for decarbonizing our industry. Many chemical processes of the 20th century will soon give way to cleaner, more efficient bio-processes. The Industrial Revolution was driven by abundant energy and competitive raw materials. This amazing burst of progress led to ample food, improved health, longer lives, and unprecedented comfort. These advances should not be abandoned, but reimagined, and accelerated. Today, we can significantly enhance the availability of raw materials while drastically reducing our impact on the climate and our environment. Synthetic biology is one of the main tools to achieve this shift, and I am thrilled to be part of this ecosystem!

Today’s agricultural system is facing a critical moment. Low genetic gains in our major crops and environmental degradation are impacting global food security, compounded by an unpredictably changing climate. Representing 450 Gt of global carbon, plants are a critical lever for addressing these interconnected challenges, but the pace of agricultural innovation has been slow. Synthetic biology is revolutionising the world of healthcare with novel approaches to drug production, CRISPR therapeutic treatments and the advent of personalised genomics. Could we leverage advances in synthetic biology to unlock the power of plants and safeguard our agricultural industry? Our programme thesis Synthetic Plants for a Sustainable Future is led by ARIA Programme Director Angie Burnett, and sets out a vision for unlocking new plant capabilities to meet the future needs of humankind. By uniting expertise in plant and synthetic biology, we’ll aim to design, build, and deliver synthetic chromosomes and synthetic chloroplasts that are viable in a living plant, and imbue plants with new suites of functionality – from reducing agricultural water use to protecting crop yields in uncertain conditions. We’re now seeking the expertise of cell biologists, biochemists, molecular biologists, geneticists, plant biologists, plant synthetic biologists, non-plant synthetic biologists, systems biologists, social scientists, and ethicists. We’d love you to read the thesis, share your feedback, and sign up for updates on funding opportunities: https://lnkd.in/e2JzS7Ya
