Enjoying the school holidays? Roads around you feeling quieter, safer, healthier? We've estimated that the London school run causes an estimated 500,000 daily car trips.. and that's only for primary pupils. We need an integrated transport approach to creating convenient, safe, clean and green schools runs. #cleanair #safestreets #sustainabletransport

Earlier this month, our President & CEO, Josipa Petrunic (she/elle) joined a discussion on TVO's The Agenda about the difficulties of traveling around Ontario. Joined by Wendy Landry, Éric Boutilier, Eric Miller and host, Steve Paikin, Josipa discussed the challenges Ontarians face with public transit and why only 20% of Ontarians use public transit as their primary source of transportation. In 2024, according to ATSB in the 6-year period from July 2015 to June 2021, there were 211 collisions involving rail vehicles and road vehicles at level crossings in Australia (about 35 per year). Of these, 34 of the collisions involved heavy road vehicles (that is, heavy freight vehicles or buses) and there are >1,000 near misses in 2024. So are more "bells and flashing lights" and Apps the solution. LSM TrainSense® (Int. pat. pend.), a cost-effective, life-saving solution priced under $100 per in-cabin device. This system requires no extra infrastructure or maintenance, is easy to implement. It can integrate with existing technology to reduce human error and environmental factors, providing alerts and can trigger vehicle deceleration or even braking if warnings are ignored. I recently joined a group of dedicated Canadians who all worried about mobility and public transit across Ontario as part of TVO's The Agenda, where we discussed the challenges Ontarians face with traveling within the province. While there are bright spots, we can look at a city like Tokyo where 80% of its citizens take transit and see that there is still much room for improvement in Toronto and across Canada where the opposite is true and less than 20% of citizens take transit regularly. Where car culture and car-based urban design predominates, our economic productivity declines and atrophies. Watch the full discussion below with Wendy Landry, Éric Boutilier, Eric Miller and Steve Paikin.

🏢🚊Why is it so hard to get extensive public transit and affordable housing built in Los Angeles? The answer may surprise you. A major contributor: “Community groups” of “activists”—that are actually 7-figure funded by wealthy residents and represented by powerful lawyers—tie up projects that they don’t want in their neighborhoods (or, in the case of the subway, bringing riff-raff to their neighborhoods) in litigation. Outdated zoning and CEQA review allow for this. It’s why a ballot measure to build affordable housing that was overwhelmingly approved by voters essentially died on the vine. Many Angelenos don’t know this and equate “community groups” with the voice of the people, allowing these groups to rally others to their #NIMBY (not in my backyard) cause, even if deep down they support greater housing access. From the article: “To stop a subway, or at least significantly stall it, making it less desirable to decision-makers, Rosen is spearheading a threatened lawsuit through a community group, Keep Bel-Air Beautiful.” A more fitting name: Make Bel-Air Great Again. #housingcrisis #publictransport #ceqa
And you thought the years of grandstanding against the Purple Line crossing Beverly Hills were intense? Meet the Bel Air gang preferring the fumes of the 405 bumper-to-bumper daily grind.
