Today is International HR Day -- As someone who entered the HR space later in their career, I can tell you that HR is often undervalued and misrepresented as just the "Company Police" or the "function in charge of all things fun". However, a great HR function can bring a lot of value to an organization by fostering a positive work environment, attracting/retaining top talent, and driving strategic initiatives that propel the organization forward. Let's take a moment to appreciate the hard work and dedication of our HR team members. If you have an HR team member, take a second to remind them of what they mean to you. #InternationalHRDay

"HR works for the company!” While this is ultimately true, unless you work in HR, you wouldn’t understand how false this statement is. As HR professionals who practice our craft with passion, sometimes the difficult conversations had are with the company on the employees' benefit. No, legally we can do this, but ethically it doesn’t align with our mission, vision, or company values. Yes, DEI includes ageism, not just minorities or protected classes. And so on. It challenges your morals and ethics on a daily basis and sometimes wears on you even after hours. #equitymatters

"What was the early career mistake that you committed as an HR professional?" I asked this question to our HR friends here on LinkedIn, and I'm glad they've spoken. More than 90% of the poll respondents were HRs, and majority shared the same sentiment: When they were starting in HR, they committed the mistake of 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 (57%)! 36% said they made the mistake of 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗹𝘆, while 6% said they 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗹𝘆. “Women holding these positions should be the norm, and not the exception.” Yikes. Received an invite for an HR webinar that said this 🙄. HR needs to be unbiased. HR needs to be inclusive. HR needs diversity. HR needs to hire the most qualified and culturally fitted candidate. HR needs to lead by example. Statements like the one above do not truly progress our civilization and society. No it widens the gap and is divisive. #hr
