Mastering doing business within a Capitalistic society is a twisted ride, there’s no denying it.
The co-operative model is a more humane and egalitarian way of doing business that puts “people over capital”.
Every worker has a stake in the company’s fortunes and a say in how it is run, and receives a share of the profits.

We've got a scoop to share: At Southern Ice Cream, we've implemented the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) to take our business to the next level. This system has helped us streamline operations and better empower our employees. Hear it from our VP, Robert Barton 👇
“EOS is more about growth and is really the tool we use to plan where we are going and how we’re going to get there. The employees are empowered to help create new process and improve existing ones by attending weekly level 10 meetings where we discuss any issues and get feedback from the group on how we should move forward in the best interest of the company. I think allowing them to create and help improve the processes and procedures makes it their idea and thus giving them more ownership and willingness to make it work”.

A philanthropic legacy project in retirement focused on a circular economy. Mend It, Australia is a repair advocate and networker for Australia. It also advocates for Australian right to repair legislation.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED WEBINAR via Product Stewardship Centre of Excellence
Interesting that there is no hint off news on where the Productivity Commission Right To Repair Inquiry Report 2021.
Good to hear it mentioned that product stewardship is not only about recycling. Applaud efforts by the panel of speakers to highlight the important role of repair but to also flag the barriers faced by scaling up to include it.
The AAAA example of over 10 years to effect legislative change is a prime example of what the Australian repair movement is facing. It appears repair is valued when it comes to motor vehicles, and rightly so, but what about tractors, medical equipment, textiles, household appliances etc.
Personally, informal attendance by invitation at a community repair cafe in 2023 is what we enjoyed as a social engagement activity.
Many repair cafes limit their undertaking to monthly get togethers. Volunteering to organise events takes quite a bit of unpaid time behind the scenes.
As MiA, we have visited many repair cafes to inform our broader interest in the right to repair movement. The insights gleaned over the past decade have been invaluable from many perspectives.
MiA agrees with that highlighted by Yas Grigaliunas and Leanne Wiseman that repair will not be saved and scaled up on the backs of volunteers at repair cafes.
Ironic really when volunteers across the globe have been scaling up the repair cafe movement. Informal volunteering seems to suit many people, and repair cafes will continue to grow, and also close, because funding is not ongoing and venues are not dedicated.
However, may repair cafes want to remain as 'sweet as they are' and function on small grants and donations, with volunteers and minimal bureaucratic involvement. MiA can't blame them!!
Businesses Like Circonomy see the value in repair cafes and their repairers [lots of talent and experience on show once a month], MiA strongly suggests that offering payment to repair cafes and/or their volunteers in a scale up of repair in small business, NFPs/charities etc needs to be explored, as it could be a win win for repair's revival on a larger scale.

I LOVE a good illustration to showcase key insights, innovations and ideas and this is definitely one of my faves. 💚
Created by ✏️ Elise Motalli, during the Product Stewardship Centre of Excellence webinar, discussing the Role of Repair in Product Stewardship, where I was fortunate to sit on a panel with the formidable Leanne Wiseman and Lesley Yates, with Spyro Kalos keeping us on time and task.
In Australia, the Productivity Commission conducted a comprehensive inquiry into the right to repair, releasing its final report to the Australian Government in October 2021. 🛠
I have fond memories of sharing the work Circonomy (formerly: World's Biggest Garage Sale) was doing at the time, with our pilot partnership with Officeworks gained momentum, setting the stage for nationwide expansion. ❤️
While we await a policy response or reported action on the recommendations, it hasn't slowed down our proactive approach. Circonomy continues to evolve, rooted in the principles of repair, renew, repurpose, recommerce, and product stewardship, paving the way for a more circular economy. ♻
Fast forward two years since the inquiry, and we celebrated the opening of our first interstate Circonomy Outlet in Reservoir, Melbourne. 😍
Big shoutout to the incredible Circonomy team – your dedication has brought our vision of repair, renew, repurpose, and recommerce to life. Here's to more milestones ahead! 🌟

When I started Vinotas Selections, I asked myself who would actually be buying the wines I imported? Working backwards from the consumer, through the retailer/restaurant, to the wholesaler, allowed us to scale rapidly by responding to their needs, even during challenging times.
That philosophy has been baked into our genes from the start, and remains at the core of what we do.
This great article by Michael Houck (https://lnkd.in/evRjTaiU) shows how this is an industry-agnostic attitude that should be adopted by companies, no matter the sector.
Really happy about our latest conversation with Jay A., CEO of Dirty Clean Food, about what it takes to build a successful direct-to-consumer #business in the regen space- basically buying from 👩🏻🌾 #farmers and delivering to consumer, restaurants, etc.- and in the most remote city on the planet. Despite all challenges of B2C, Jay makes a passionate case for it.
🥧 A deep dive full of golden nuggets of direct-to-consumer companies, what works and what doesn’t, but also a long conversation on the power of #transparency within businesses and the most important return of all, #inspiration.
📚 What are the lessons learned? Looking at the graveyard of direct-to-consumer companies we have seen, especially in COVID years, raising a lot of money, struggling, or shutting down. Does that mean disrupting the current 🛒 supermarket oligopolies isn’t worth it?
