Thanks to Debra Silimeo for highlighting this great event. Another key takeaway from our table discussion: managing and governing a nonprofit organization is just as challenging as managing and governing a for profit entity – if not more so. My esteemed colleagues called out some of the most significant constraints and challenges faced by nonprofit executives and boards as compared to their for-profit counterparts: -- Mission: 501(c)(3) nonprofits must be organized and operated exclusively for an exempt charitable purpose. Revenues cannot benefit private interests, and political and lobbying activities are limited. These tax-driven restrictions have implications for strategic planning, revenue generation and overall operations (including talent recruitment and retention). -- Dependency on donations and grants. Many nonprofits rely on donations, grants and fundraising efforts to fund operations. Managing the uncertainty of such funding sources and donor relationships adds a layer of complexity to financial planning and sustainability that for profit entities do not face. In addition, such funds may be restricted in their application. -- Stakeholder diversity. Unlike “regular” corporations where fiduciary duties are aimed at maximizing stockholder value, nonprofits serve diverse stakeholder groups, including beneficiaries (clients, customers, program participants), donors and grant providers, volunteers, board members and the community at large. So, for anyone who might underestimate the difficulty of running, managing or governing a nonprofit, think again! Shout out to the interesting discussion and the community contributions made by these folks. Fantastic women gathered today at the Washington #Business Journal's #Bizwoman Leadership Council. We had a timely conversation about the business of the non-profit community, how the "care" community is being hurt by the "scare" community, and what we might do about it. #women #leaders supporting each other! Women working in Christian nonprofits, I'm curious to know how relationships have influenced your leadership. Would you share your experience in a 5-10 minute anonymous survey? Women are often encouraged to develop leadership skills through training, but research indicates that the relationships surrounding women are at least as important as (maybe more than!) skill development. The study behind this survey focuses on those relationships that help women launch and sustain their leadership journeys, including the type of support they receive through their relationship networks. Participants must be women 18 years or older who are working for or have recently worked for a Christian nonprofit (i.e. church, denomination, para-church organization, charity) registered in Canada or the USA. Please consider sharing this survey with any women in your network who may qualify. This survey is part of a PhD dissertation at Eastern University. Thanks in advance for your time and support!

Women leaders do more than hold positions of power… They shape cultures that are inclusive. They foster empathy. They drive collaboration. In a world where diversity and inclusion are essential to business success, women leaders are the key to building stronger organizations. It’s time to recognize that the path to better organizational cultures is paved by women in leadership roles. Have you worked with a woman leader who transformed the culture of an organization? Women make up 85 per cent of non-profit support staff in Canada but hold only 70 per cent of senior executive positions. A US study also found that male leaders in the sector typically hold more power and resources than female leaders do. Hear from women about what the sector needs to change to get more women into leadership roles and why there is optimism for the future in this article. #nonprofitleadership #womeninleadership

DEI - diversity equity inclusion; DEIB diversity equity inclusion, and belonging; IDEA inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility - no matter which acronym you prefer it is an important topic. Over the past 20+ years, I've been professionally involved with nonprofit organizations working towards positive social change. It's been fantastic to see a growing focus on inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility among nonprofit staff in recent years. The commitment to creating a more inclusive environment by these teams is truly inspiring! However, I've observed a bit of a gap. While staff at many organizations are actively participating in conversations, trainings, and taking action to make their organizations more accessible and equitable, I rarely see the same level of participation from boards of directors. It would be more impactful if the leadership of these organizations was also involved in this critical work especially when it comes to hiring practices. I'm curious to hear your thoughts. Should DEI training be mandatory for nonprofit board members? #nonprofit #DEI #leadership #socialimpact #IDEA #nonprofit #leadership #socialimpact #IDEA

Despite the fact that women make up the majority of the nonprofit sector, they frequently encounter obstacles when it comes to assuming leadership positions. 😒 To address these challenges, the Women’s Nonprofit Network has emerged with the aim of empowering and promoting women’s leadership within the sector. This network recognizes the importance of providing women with the necessary resources and support to break through these barriers. Currently, the Women’s Nonprofit Network is in its nascent stages. However, we have started off by forming a strong community on LinkedIn. We invite you to join our group by visiting: https://lnkd.in/g3ahjmkF. 🥳 Looking ahead, our goal is to become the premier hub for women to access mentorship, networking, and advancement opportunities in the nonprofit sector. As the Women’s Nonprofit Network continues to grow, we aspire to become an influential force in breaking gender barriers and creating a more equal and diverse leadership landscape.
