The IPL is back, and so are gutka ads! It's disheartening to see Kapil Dev Nikanj, once a cricket legend and my childhood hero, compromising his integrity for a few rupees. In a recent advertisement, he's seen endorsing Kamla Pasand alongside Chris Gayle, a Caribbean cricket sensation. Kamla Pasand is marketed as pan masala, cleverly bypassing regulations restricting the advertising of tobacco and alcohol products by promoting a non-tobacco item. However, the reality behind Kamla Pasand is that it's essentially gutka, sold discreetly in small plastic sachets under the same brand. The company behind it, KP Group, remains shrouded in mystery with minimal online presence, save for reports of tax evasion and alleged political pay-offs. It's peculiar that a company capable of affording prime-time advertising slots during India's biggest sporting event lacks a basic website or is secretive about its ownership. And yet, it is spending millions promoting its brand. Gutka, a mixture of tobacco, areca nut, and other substances is sold in small plastic sachets. Introduced in the 1970's it is a significant contributor to oral cancer in India. The risk of oral cancer for gutka users is nearly 400 times higher than for non-users. It also causes oral submucous fibrosis, a debilitating condition that progressively reduces mouth opening which has no known cure. The widespread use of gutka is contributing significantly to the approximately 200,000 new cases of oral cancer reported in India every year. During the IPL, influential figures like Kapil Dev unwittingly expose impressionable minds to these health risks, especially in rural and impoverished areas. From Brainstorming to Breakthrough! This patent wouldn't be possible without this incredible team! Navanil Das Tanmay Srivastav ✨ It all started with a curious thought in my own room! Looking around, I wondered how everyday objects could be made "smarter." Initially, a smart mirror seemed intriguing, but further research revealed it already existed. So, I started thinking about other possibilities. With the whole world moving towards eco-friendly solutions, I knew I wanted to create something sustainable. So, I turned my focus to windows - a perfect canvas for a sustainable project♻️. India's vast tropical geography presents a unique challenge: managing excessive heat gain in buildings. To address this, we focused on developing a sustainable smart window that utilizes a specialized material to selectively block heat while maintaining natural light transmission. Research, refine, repeat! Through extensive brainstorming and prototyping (huge thanks to my teammates, Navanil Das and Tanmay Srivastav!), we developed a sustainable smart window. However, we knew there was more potential. Could we push the boundaries of sustainability? ☀️ Can we use nature's own energy source?! After dedicated research, we cracked the code and integrated solar energy generation. This window isn't just smart, it harnesses renewable energy too! The ultimate vision? Net zero buildings! Imagine utilizing all that sunshine streaming through windows instead of letting it pass through unused. There's still work to be done but seeing this idea become a patent is truly remarkable.This patent isn't the finish line, but it validates the potential of this idea.
