I just spoke with an Executive who has been displaced, and I want to double down on how important your network is right now. Here’s what she shared with me: She got an interview for a one-off industry. (Rather than mortgage this was consumer banking). How? She applied for the role, then called someone that she knew within the company where she was applying, asked to be connected to the hiring manager, and boom! She got the interview. However, once she met with the whole panel, the Decision Maker decided she wasn’t exactly what he had in mind, as he wanted someone who had already successfully worked in consumer banking. Here’s what I advised next: Reach back out to that Decision maker. But first: Come up with your business plan. How you would reach x goal - Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4. Put the hurdles you anticipate, and allow for reflection and pivot for unanticipated hurdles. Explain how you have already done this in your most recent role. Heck, highlight how your mortgage experience will provide valuable insight that someone who’s only done consumer will lack. Worst case scenario you don’t get the job. Having transitioned from a sales role to a Business Analyst at United Wholesale Mortgage; I've come to appreciate the immense value of open-ended questioning in both fields. In sales, open-ended questions allowed me to uncover the needs, concerns, and aspirations of my clients. It was beyond just making a sale; it was about building a relationship based on trust and understanding. As I moved into my role as a Business Analyst, I found a new perspective on these questions. They became a tool to dive deep into systems, processes, and user experiences, helping me to analyze and understand complex business requirements. Open-ended questions do not just seek a 'yes' or a 'no'. They elicit detailed responses, encourage dialogue, and foster innovative thinking. They're the key to uncovering the real needs and potential improvements that can transform business operations.  Active listening is a vital component in forming open-ended questions that is often overlooked. More often than not, the desire for an immediate response leads to an abundance of questions but compromises the quality of the conversation. It is crucial to listen with the intention to comprehend, rather than merely preparing a response. This is the indispensable counterpart to the art of asking meaningful questions. This market is not for the faintest of heart. We can all agree that rising rates adversely impact EVERY segment of our business. This is reinforced by the dozens of negative/bearish posts I see every time that I scroll LinkedIn. The truth is that every mortgage professional has two choices: You can either let rising rates be an excuse not to succeed OR use them as your motivation to achieve success. I choose the latter. EVERY single day the market remains “tough” is another opportunity to get in the lab and outwork my competition. Reinvesting in lead generation, higher quality staff, and marching towards being more successful than we were the day before. Hiring when there are more options for candidates means that you'll have to make much more competitive offers to tempt high-performers. That's the cost of waiting. 5 opinions I have about the mortgage industry. Do you agree with 1 or more? 1. Realtors think that from ownership down, we all make much more per loan than we do. 2. Most originators saw a nice uptick in apps & pre-approvals from 3/24-4/24. Then from 5/24-6/24 those #'s dropped from 25% to 40%. I heard this from top originators in different markets. If activity is slower now, imagine what the 4th quarter of 2024 and 1st quarter of 2025 could look like. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best. 3. Many non sales employees have watched RIF's occur the last few years & were shocked to see some of the more talented, possibly higher paid employees let go. Now, many of the remaining top performing employees have added pressure on them to pick up the slack for the less talented people that were kept. These top performer's need their job but they are being burnt out & will jump ship as soon as the right opportunity presents itself. 4. Hiring managers. There is no excuse to not follow through with every recruit. Give them closure one way or another. I understand that many of you hiring managers may be overwhelmed, but put yourself in the shoes of an applicant that has been out of work, is struggling to pay their bills & is living with a high level of stress & anxiety. At least send them an email giving closure. 5. The industry is losing some great people. They are sick & tired of the selfishness, lack of loyalty & being on the clock 24-7. We are not adding the next generation of sales and op's people quickly enough. That must change.
