As a recruiter, I understand the daily grind of sifting through stacks of CV's, sorting them into "yes," "no," and "maybe" piles. That's why I can't stress enough the importance of a well formatted CV tailored to the specific role you are applying for. But beyond the surface, it's crucial for recruiters to delve deeper, engaging with candidates to uncover what lies beneath their resume and get a sense of who that person really is. Of course, when you are recruiting for a role you need to ensure someone's skills match the job description. However, it is equally if not MORE important that the person you are putting forward for a role is going to be a good cultural fit for the team. **Side note** this is why actually visiting your clients is so important, so you can experience the 'vibes' first hand. I connected with a candidate for a role (who applied) when I reached out to discuss the role in further detail, the response was simply, "Read my CV, it's all there." While a CV is undoubtedly a valuable tool, as a recruitment consultant, my role extends beyond forwarding documents. I'm here to represent you to our clients, not merely pass along information. Engaging in conversation allows me to grasp your experiences, skills, and aspirations creating a strong story for our clients. A had a senior professional approach me recently. They were feeling frustrated and overlooked. They had the experience and the skills, but their CV just wasn’t getting seen. Together, we reworked their CV not to ‘beat the bots’ (Applicant Tracking Systems or ATS), but to feed them exactly what they needed. We carefully analysed the job descriptions they were targeting and integrated key phrases and terms that (ATS) look for. It wasn’t about trickery; it was about alignment. Through this process, we changed their perspective from trying to outsmart the system to understanding how to work with it. This shift made all the difference.
