#confession: Sometimes I feel awkward answering when people ask what I do. I recently got a reminder that I really need to step into my role as entrepreneur and founder of this awesome business with confidence and pride. Two weekends ago my girlfriend invited me as her +1 to a Jays' game in one of the executive suites. After mingling and ensuring his clients/guests were comfortable, the host sat beside me to chat. He is the Senior VP of Sales for a finance/investment firm, and I immediately felt myself shrinking in nervousness as we spoke. But he seemed nice, put me at ease, and after some conversation, he asked me what I do. I pulled one of my lovely business cards out of its equally lovely holder and said, "oh, I run a little natural skincare business called Sorrel & Sage." He took the card, examined it, and complimented me on the presentation. Then he said, "But you do not run 'a little skincare company.' You are the founder of a burgeoning skincare venture that provides natural solutions for those with sensitive skin. To be an entrepreneur is commendable and it's not easy work. Don't ever minimize what you do!" His advice resonated with me, and I will recall his words the next time I feel the urge to "small up" myself. So allow me to re-introduce myself: 🗣️ I'm Joanne, the founder Sorrel & Sage, a flourishing enterprise focused on natural skincare + self-care solutions for those with sensitive skin. You can find the full range of products at www.shopsorrelandsage.ca. If you have any inquiries about the brand or want to know more about a particular product, feel free to reach out! I love hearing from you and I'm happy to answer any questions or assist you on your skincare journey. Take care and be well! 🌿 #sayitloud #entrepreneur #femaleowned #smallbusiness

My journey into beauty was a fascinating one. Tell 12-year-old me that she would be a beauty entrepreneur, and she would have argued that she was going to be a licensed family doctor. Humorously, I'm still a "doctor" – for the skin, or better put, a skincare therapist. What started as a quest for a solution to my skin woes soon turned into a passion. Then it transformed from passion to profit. I remember my first batch of orange peel oil (don't cringe) many years ago. I used it on my hair and scalp, and it was effective. With better information now as a cosmetic chemist, I know it wasn't the best formulation. Yet, it was the beginning of my journey into what I do now. Figuratively speaking, I give beauty for ashes. As a beauty entrepreneur, I don't know which I enjoy more: researching beauty trends and formulations, creating products in my lab, or seeing the satisfaction from a client using my products. Over time, I have fallen in love with entrepreneurship and marketing. Put me in a room full of business owners, and I'll be so alive, learning, taking in ideas, and sharing wisdom. I've faced my share of resistance, from "you don't look it" to "you're dark-skinned, how am I sure your products work?" But those who dominate don't back down. As a business existing for over three years, it's safe to say, the only way to go is up!

I was honored to interview Laura Thompson, cofounder of Three Ships Beauty. The most exciting part of my job as an advisor is learning from resilient, creative and inspirational entrepreneurs like Laura and her partner Connie Lo. Give it a watch for learnings on: 1) Sourcing Capital as Young Female Entrepreneurs and the unique challenges. 2) Double Down on what is working: do not chase "tennis balls". 3) Invest in your product (or service) and work past the noise. 4) Know your audience: be clear who your customer is. 5) (My Favourite) Overcoming personal challenges as a business owner. #MNP #WomenEntrepreneurs #StartupFunding #BusinessGrowth #InnovativeLeadership #FemaleFounders #SuccessStories #EntrepreneurLife #BusinessAdvice #EntrepreneurialJourney #WomenInBusiness

My life changed when I learned to let go. Let go of perfection. Let go of fear. Let go of what others thought of me. When I started Phabs Hair, I had big dreams but bigger doubts. Who was I to launch a beauty and wellness brand? But I leaned into my passion and took the leap. Here’s what I discovered along the way: - You don’t have to be perfect to start. - Fear is just a sign you’re growing. - People will always have opinions—don’t let them define you. Today, Phabs Hair isn’t just a brand; it’s a movement. A reminder that beauty starts with confidence inside. What’s holding you back from chasing your dream? #Dreambig #Lifelessons #entrepreneurship

Do you remember the guy who tweeted his credit card number? And told people to buy whatever they wanted. I got the chance to meet this gutsy and out-of-the-box thinking man! Every once in a while, you meet someone who completely shatters every rule in the book, and for me, that person is Rahul Krishnan, the founder of Bold Care, a D2C brand. This guy is next-level and in the most quirky, mind-bending way possible. Every room Rahul walks into instantly becomes a laughter fest. He brings insane jokes and endless laughs wherever he goes. And he is not just the life of the part but also a brand genius. The way he’s built BoldCare is so inspirational. He doesn’t play by the rules. He writes his own, and honestly, it’s so refreshing to see someone flip the script like that. It’s not just another wellness brand. Whether it’s talking about sensitive topics like hair loss, skincare, or intimacy, BoldCare owns the conversation. Meeting Rahul in person was absolutely insane. The energy, passion and joy of building a brand is something he brings to the table in the most authentic way possible. And trust me, there’s so much to learn from him. Whether it’s how to stand out in a crowded market or how to make your brand relatable, there is so much he can tell you. Don’t you think his idea of tweeting his card number was a bold move? #entrepreneurship #creativity
