Coming out of a little hiatus to say: I am glad SHRM is finally owning who they’ve always been. A stale, anti-progressive, organization who has been out of touch with HR for YEARS.
It’s validating to finally witness, after years of refusing to give them my organization’s dollars for useless certifications and boring conferences, trolling their posts for lack of awareness and inclusivity, and fighting clients who said that the certs gave us legitimacy - the rest of the HR world is seeing the light.
What does this mean now? It means that HR has a fighting chance to take companies by storm and lead the way.
It means that other, more innovative memberships like Hebba Youssef’s SafeSpace can be at the forefront of who HR needs to become.
HRCI - coming for you next with your useless, money-grabbing certifications.

That picture below? That’s me watching HR professionals get up in arms about SHRM (the Society for Human Resources Management, for those not in “the know”) removing equity from their DEI certification and training focus for HR practitioners.
🤣😂🤣😂
C’mon, y'all. It's SHRM. What are y'all up in arms about? They have always been nothing but a tool of capitalism, much like the field they consider themselves a governing body of. They have always been transactional and performative, and their “certified DEI training” has always been transactional and performative. SHRM removing equity from their framework isn’t shocking. Have you seen some of their guides and templates? It’s not like they were actually using an equity lens.
And real talk? SHRM certifications have always been hollow, expensive tools to somehow “prove” you’re an HR “professional.” They’ve duped workplaces and a whole industry into believing their pricy certification and its heartless, devoid-of-nuance-and-humanity exam is somehow the standard of an industry and that people without their certification are somehow less-than.
That sound equitable to you?
Some of y’all have to quit being heartbroken by capitalism and white supremacy.

Thanks for sharing this Gwen Navarrete Klapperich, CPTD, CPACC. I retain my currency with my SPHR and let my ATD membership drop for the first time in over 15 years. I got a lot out of both organizations early in my career and feel that my values and, hopefully, intelligence help me to make the right decisions without a new certification or checking the boxes for an association.
I wonder: Are talent management certificates trending toward the way technology workers prove their value and standards? I have worked with many tech leaders that did not earn a formal degree. They have some certifications and can ace a technical interview-which is why they get hired. Do the job and make things better for others.

Recently, SHRM announced an increase in their membership pricing, prompting a widespread search for alternatives within the HR community. While this may seem like a setback for many, it opens up an incredible opportunity for employers to step up and support their HR teams in a dynamic way.
💡The Solution? A Professional Certification Stipend💡
This means they could choose to apply it towards their SHRM membership or explore other educational avenues. The beauty of this approach lies in its flexibility - it puts the power of choice in the hands of your employees.
Why This Matters:
✔️Empowerment and Motivation: Not only does this remove the financial burden from your employees, but it also empowers them to take charge of their professional development. A workforce that feels supported in its growth is a motivated and engaged workforce.
✔️Continual Learning: In the ever-evolving field of HR, continual learning isn't just beneficial; it's necessary. By facilitating access to the latest resources, training, and certifications, you're ensuring that your HR team remains on the cutting edge.
✔️Attracting Talent: Offering a professional certification stipend can also serve as a powerful tool in attracting top talent. It signals that your organization values growth, development, and the well-being of its employees.

𝐈'𝐦 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 "𝐄” 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐃𝐄𝐈𝐁.
Here's Why:
In recent discussions surrounding DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging), many HR professionals have expressed frustration over SHRM decision to remove the "E" for equity. However, I believe this move opens up an important conversation about what true inclusivity means.
𝐄𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬:
Equity aims to provide targeted support based on individual needs, but it can unintentionally emphasize perceived deficiencies. By focusing on what people lack, we risk reinforcing a mindset of neediness and division rather than empowerment.
𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲:
Making resources available to all employees respects their autonomy and agency. Each individual can determine what they need and when they need it, fostering a sense of ownership and self-direction in their personal and professional development.
𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬:
Instead of creating targeted programs based on assumed needs, let's offer a comprehensive range of development opportunities that are accessible to everyone. This approach ensures that all employees have equal access to resources, allowing them to choose their path based on their unique goals.
𝐀𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬:
Equity should not be about labeling individuals based on what they lack. By providing resources universally, we avoid making assumptions about people's needs and create an environment that supports everyone equally.
𝐅𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲:
True inclusivity means creating an environment where all resources are available to everyone, ensuring equal opportunity for success. This approach promotes a culture of inclusivity where every employee feels valued and supported.

Two important facts:
1. Equity matters
2. SHRM is an embarrassment to HR
-----
Equity is "the idea that all employees should have equal access to opportunities, resources, and treatment, regardless of their background, identity, or experiences".
SHRM and its President do not think that this is important. They say "dropping the 'E' from DEI makes sense because 'DEI' does not work".
What does not work is SHRM. It never has. And, it especially does not work now when it has become a complete cult to its leader.
Cancel your membership to SHRM. Stop funding that cult. You don't need their certification.
