Controlling Decarburization in Spring Steel Rolling for ERC clips Spring steel for ERC clips (55Si7 Grade) having silicon in the range of 1.5 % to 2 % highly susceptible to surface decarburisation during heating above 850Deg C. Several factors need to be addressed throughout the rolling process, starting from the reheating furnace through to the final cooling stage to minimise the decarburisation. Following are the key measures that can be taken Furnace Atmosphere Control: Maintain the atmosphere to limit oxygen exposure and avoid overheating beyond the optimal range based on input bloom size. Minimize Exposure Time: Reduce soaking times and optimize rolling speeds to limit the time steel spends at high temperatures. Optimize Rolling Parameters: Adjust draft schedules carefully and avoid excessive descaling that can remove protective surface scale. Post-Rolling Cooling: Implement controlled cooling to prevent oxidation while the material is still hot. Use Protective Coatings: Consider anti-decarburization coatings to protect blooms from oxidation during reheating. Monitor Regularly: Frequent inspection of decarburization depth through testing can help catch issues early and maintain product quality.
