Families are systems. Systems are not a straight line of cause and effect, unlike billiards for example. In the latter, hitting one ball into another causes movement. Indeed, in order for anything on the table to move, something needs a direct hit. In a system, a change to any one area can ripple and cause movement in an area that doesn't appear to be a direct hit. Consider a forest. A change in the amount of rain in one year can have a huge effect on the growth of the flora and fauna. The plants that love the rain may survive, the plants that don't may not. The animals that feed on the first plant may therefore receive more food, and procreate more potentially creating a shift in the balance of the animal life. The animals may create more of a specific manure, and which puts specific nutrients back in the soil, which in turns creates additional plant growth, and so on.... Systems are complex. The more data we can gather about a system, the better we can understand it. And when we understand a system, we have more opportunity to create choice in our reactions to changes in the system.
