Years back, I volunteered to donate blood but I was sent away after the initial screening. They said I didn't have enough to give and I was even referred to the haematologist to further evaluate the cause of my low red blood cell count. 🙈 Imagine that I didn't go there, I wouldn't have known I had become anaemic due to my diet then. I was a junior resident, in a new environment, stressed out at work and living mostly on tea and bread. I was diagnosed with iron deficiency anaemia. I got treated and the rest they say is history. Blood is life. While your body produces blood as needed, you need to have a balanced diet for your bone marrow to get raw materials to produce blood. One other thing that stimulates your body to produce more blood is when you donate blood. Isn't that interesting? I hope that will encourage you to donate.🙂 Getting a bag of blood can make the difference between life and death in an accident victim, a woman who has just delivered a baby, or a patient who has kidney failure. Some people would rather pay to find donors for their loved ones than donate themselves, for reasons they would rather not disclose. What are the reasons people may decline voluntary blood donation even when they are fit to donate? Perhaps, the fear of needle pricks, fear of fainting after donation, or a previous bad experience? #linkedin100 #healtheducation #worldblooddonorday
