The International Day for Biodiversity 2024 – Be Part of the Plan This year’s theme “Be part of the plan”, is a call to action for all stakeholders to halt and reverse the loss of biodiversity. This is by supporting the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (The Biodiversity Plan) which offers opportunities for #cooperation and #partnerships among diverse actors such as #localcommunities, governments, NGOs, Indigenous people, businesses and individuals – believing that everyone has a role to play and therefore can Be Part of the Plan. 📔 The Biodiversity Plan was adopted during the COP 15 and aimed to support the achievement of the #Sustainable Development Goals. Additionally, the Plan seeks to build on the Convention’s previous Strategic Plans of a world living in #harmony with nature by 2050. In light of this, allow me to tough on 2 key elements: #ClimateChange and #Human Behavior. 🔱 The question on the effect of #climatechange on biodiversity cannot be ignored as it has #altered, #destroyed and #threatened the various #ecosystems. The risk of extinction of some of the plants and animal species has continued to increase with climate change. With global warming some plants and animal species have become extinct while others have moved to higher latitudes towards the Earth’s poles. 🔱 Human Behavior has also greatly contributed to loss of biodiversity with increased land use. Examples of such behaviors include #overfishing, #hunting and #poaching, use of chemical #pesticide and emission of harmful #gasses among others. Humans have altered and reshaped the natural habitats hence resulting to loss of biodiversity. ❇ Therefore, there is need for all of us to collaboratively work to protect and enhance our biodiversity and there is no other right time to do so than NOW! #InaternationalDayofBiodiversity_BePartofthePlan #Climatechange #HumanBehavior #SustaianbleDevelopment Ivan T. Indigenous Peoples comprise just 6% of the global population, but they protect a huge percentage of what’s left of biodiversity on Earth. This Biodiversity COP, ICIMOD is joining arms with those seeking to give these groups the opportunity to be recognised, and rewarded, for their vital contributions – specifically by pressing for other effective conservation measures (OECM) to be cemented in UN processes, supported through conservation financing, and facilitated through national policies. Ensuring Indigenous-led conservation work counts towards national conservation targets is not just a route to ensuring traditional knowledge holders’ work as custodians of biodiversity is financially rewarded. It might also pave the way for increased land rights and legal protections. Join us at two side events on OECMs where ICIMOD’s Biodiversity Lead, Sunita Chaudhary, will be presenting: - Action for Peace and Biodiversity 📍Mavecure – Business and Industry Organizations meeting room, Plaza One ⏰ 18:00 - Exploring Voluntary Commitments by Non-state Actors in Advancing Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs): Insights from China and International Perspectives 📍Cocuy – Marie Khan Women's Caucus room, Plaza One ⏰ 10:10 Follow our social media for updates and visit our landing page for more information: www.icimod.org/cbdcop16. #COP16Colombia #ForNature #HKH2CALI Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office Srabani Roy Nakul Chettri UN Biodiversity, Pradyumna Rana, David Potter

🌍 Over 190 countries will convene at #COP16 from 21st October to 1st November 2024 in Cali, Colombia, under the theme of "Peace with Nature", which will serve as a powerful call to action. With just six years left to achieve the global biodiversity targets adopted in 2022, COP16 Colombia represents a critical moment to mobilize #finance and scale action on nature. ➡️ Specialized in #NbS projects since 2010, we are firmly convinced that #biodiversity cannot be longer decoupled from #climate. These past few months, we have been working assiduously on an impact management approach that integrates biodiversity measure indicators. Biodiversity is one of our major pillars to report the ecosystemic services generated by our projects. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗰𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀: 🤝🏻 We have been invited by the Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) delegation to present and promote The Global Biodiversity Standard (TGBS) and one of our pilot projects for #certification: Nariño in Colombia. 🤝🏻 We have also been invited by the International Advisory Panel on Biodiversity Credits (IAPB) to promote our ecosystemic impact approach as a pilot in the IABP framework. We'll present our Guizhou project (China) as a showcase. 🤝🏻 As a member of Organization for Biodiversity Certificates (OBC) Framework, we'll participate at the presentation of OBC's Methodology Consortium (MC) and OBC's market approaches. These different topics will be introduced by Carole Renner (Head of Impact Department) and Pierre Gaches, Chief Development Officer. #sustainabledevelopment #sustainability #event #environment #naturebasedsolutions

🌍 Day 4 at COP16: Enhancing Biodiversity Conservation through Access and Benefit Sharing 🌿 With COP16 well underway in Cali, Colombia, it’s essential to spotlight the role of Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) in safeguarding biodiversity while empowering local and indigenous communities. The evaluation looked at over 39 ABS projects, with significant contributions toward implementing the Nagoya Protocol. Key findings from the GEF IEO's evaluation of ABS projects include: ▪ Biodiversity conservation: ABS projects have contributed to reducing biodiversity loss while promoting sustainable use of genetic resources. ▪ Community empowerment: Local communities benefit from ABS through job creation, capacity building, and equitable benefit-sharing from genetic resources. ▪ Challenges remain: Sustainable financing and technical capacity are critical areas needing further attention to ensure long-term success. As we continue at COP16, the GEF’s ABS initiatives offer valuable insights into linking biodiversity conservation with community rights and development. 📊 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eVu2Bajt #COP16 #Biodiversity #GEF #NagoyaProtocol #Conservation #IndigenousRights #SustainableDevelopment

During #COP16Colombia takes place in Cali, another part of my #sabbatical journey is coming to an end. I have been to Chinas most south-western province Yunnan and to its capital, Kunming for two weeks. Here, the previous World #Biodiversity Conference could not be held in 2020 due to COVID. It finally was held two years later in Montreal, where the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) was adopted. During my stay, I tried to enjoy the (still) rich nature and biodiversity e.g. in Xishuabanna, in southern Yunnan. Here, close to the border with Laos and Myanmar, is China's largest botanical garden, which I enjoyed visiting. The picture below was taken there. The old COP poster now servea as decoration in the staff canteen. After researching some scientific articles (e.g. by Zhen Ma 2020, https://lnkd.in/e_H3-jXq), I realised that the rapid, apparently politically driven development in this region is putting great pressure on the region's rich biodiversity and traditional land use. Wet rice cultivation has become almost impossible in the last years and the people (various minorities) are being forced to radically change their way of life. Thus, making 'Peace with Nature' is also an issue here. I hope that the outcomes of the COP16 will be commensurate with the seriousness of the situation - here and in other parts of the world. The GBF aims to reverse the rate of biodiversity loss by addressing its direct and indirect causes. It guides global biodiversity policy through four overarching goals for 2050 and a set of targets for 2030. Participants of the COP16 will review the status of implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, including alignment with national biodiversity strategies and action plans, and resource mobilisation.
