2023 was a milestone year for Aker Carbon Capture. With the award and commencement of the Ørsted Kalundborg CCS project, we are now delivering seven Carbon Capture units, the first of which will be ready to capture CO2 in 2024 🌍 We continued to see the strong market pull on Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage as part of the solution towards #NetZero. Hydrogen developers focus on energy efficiency as the main lever in the Levelized Cost of Hydrogen. With water scarcity an increasingly important issue due to climate change, equal weighting must also be given to water efficiency. Our latest report, lead by our truly awesome hydrogen technical lead Dr Caren Lacy is based on in-depth research and analysis, outlining the steps needed to reduce water use in the production process, especially in areas like site selection and cooling. It is designed to help hydrogen developers really consider water usage deeply in the design of their plants. I had the privilege of contributing as an expert to the Net-Zero Industry Tracker report prepared by World Economic Forum in collaboration with Accenture. This annual tracker monitors the progress that emission-intensive industrial sectors worldwide are making in their efforts to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The main takeaway for the shipping sector is its commitment to transitioning to clean, zero-emission fuels such as methanol, ammonia, and potentially hydrogen. However, this transition will require significant investments. **Capital Investment: Adopting zero-emission vessel propulsion requires up to $450 billion investment, adding 47% to annual fleet owner costs. Existing transport can reduce near-term emissions through efficiency improvements, alternate fuels, and exploring complementary solutions. **Infrastructure Investment: Less than 1% of the necessary infrastructure is currently in place, requiring a substantial investment of $0.4-0.6 trillion to support the development and scaling of shipping technology by 2050. **Role of hydrogen in the transition: Accelerating the development of clean hydrogen-based fuels is crucial. This involves investing in research and development, ramping up production capacity, and developing bunkering infrastructure. Clean hydrogen-based zero-emissions fuels are expected to dominate the 2050 energy mix. Currently, 99% of the shipping fuel mix still consists of fossil fuels.
