🚂-What if I could change everyone’s outlook, on what one small company can do to create an engine of good in the world..?💚 I “think” this way, it’s a “practice.” …My CEO-pals, Douglas Freeman & Eric Goodman, who keep inviting me to meetings, think this way too… and they understand how, “a leader’s behavior, good or bad, creates an indelible ripple on everyone!🤔” So I keep showing up, like last week, to meet like-minded OC CEO’s, who “lift” things! … And I was excited to meet again with Jeff Ball, at Orange County Business Council, because he “wants to change everyone’s outlook on what one organization can do to be the economic development engine for all of Orange County!” Funny… when Eric & I said, “yes,” last month to Doug’s first mtg, we had no idea there’d be so many installments, or how the Arts, Business, & Philanthropy, could be imagined so powerfully, even if sometimes, it was hard to keep-up-with, all those beautiful visions imagined out-loud… I felt like a freshman at OC Music & Dance.😂 Tho I’m happy, when sitting shoulder-to-shoulder, imagining doing more, and even if I can’t keep up, how it always results in positive ripples that last forever. A heartfelt thank you to Suzanne Weinstein for sharing her invaluable insights on the implications of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s (CFPB) actions for financial institutions. Your expertise illuminated the complexities and future direction of the CFPB in a way that was both accessible and profound. With 490 attendees and representation from over 100 credit unions, the significance of this conversation cannot be overstated. Each participant walked away with a much clearer perspective on the regulatory landscape and the strategic pathways available for navigating it. I learned it yesterday and got some suddent reflections and link to Organizational Performance. I'm not Irish, but my kids were asked to come in green to kindergarten last Friday, to appreciate the coming St. Patrick. And the holiday is full of fun and joy, so it's pleasure to observe and figure out some pecularities. St. Patrick's Day, with its symbols of luck, growth, and transformation, shares more with organizational performance than one might think. Just as St. Patrick is said to have transformed Ireland, organizations are constantly undergoing transformations to achieve growth and success. 𝗟𝘂𝗰𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 The luck associated with St. Patrick's Day can be likened to the serendipitous opportunities organizations must seize to excel. However, as the saying goes, "Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity." It's the strategic planning and readiness of an organization that truly turns these opportunities into gold. 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗹 Spring, closely associated with St. Patrick's Day, symbolizes growth and renewal—core aspects of any organization aiming for high performance. Just as the season brings new life, organizations must continually nurture growth through innovation, learning, and development. What way forward? When you run a B Corp, there isn’t a map to guide you. You’re forced to make decisions that often defy conventional business logic. During our B Corp Month panel event last week four B Corp leaders recounted moments where they had found themselves at a crossroads. Each business had decided to pave a way forward, often going against the grain of their industry. What I found most interesting is that when asked to explain why they had made purposeful decisions, there wasn’t a mention of complex analyses, but rather a deeper sense that it was simply the right thing to do - an invisible moral compass guiding them all forward. Whether it was Pip & Nut | B Corp deciding not to pursue the profitable chocolate spread market for health and environmental reasons, Brompton Bicycle loaning bikes to NHS workers during the pandemic, Back Market giving the finger to Black Friday, or Lucky Saint | B Corp™ reimagining D2C packaging to cut weight and carbon. Judged by the cold eye of capitalism, these decisions make little sense. But what I saw was four thriving businesses, who believe in something bigger than themselves. Four businesses who may have said no to a quick buck, but yes to a deeper definition of success.
