"You don't make progress by standing on the sidelines, whimpering and complaining. You make progress by implementing ideas. - Shirley Chisholm It's not enough to passively watch the injustices in our healthcare systems. True progress comes from taking action and from implementing bold ideas that challenge the status quo. By embracing Chisholm's philosophy and taking tangible steps towards progress, we can create a healthcare system that prioritizes the well-being of all individuals by actively working to address the root causes of health disparities. Together, through proactive and innovative measures, we can pave the way for a future where every BODY has the opportunity to thrive in good health. - Follow KC Health Collaborative to stay up-to-date about our efforts in fostering health equity and community connections in the Kansas City region. #healthcaresystems #takingaction #communityconnections #kansascity #challengethestatusquo #healthequity

Thank you Dr Alisahah Jackson and CommonSpirit Health for your leadership addressing the unique health challenges, black communities face. According to a recent study by The Kaiser Foundation KFF .org "How Present-Day Health Disparities for Black People Are Linked to Past Policies and Events", by Samantha Artiga, Latoya Hill , and Marley Presiado Published: Feb 22, 2024 they conclude: "Today’s health and health care disparities are rooted in a long history of U.S. policies and events and reflect the ongoing impacts of racism at multiple levels, including in systems, structures, policies, and interpersonal interactions. Understanding this past and how it shapes present-day disparities can help inform and guide efforts to address them. It also is important to recognize the resilience of marginalized people in the face of these challenges and disparities and to consider how to build on their strengths by prioritizing community engagement and leadership to mitigate disparities and improve overall health and well-being. This brief examines how past policies and events are linked to present-day disparities among Black people in health care and health outcomes. According to the study, "Today, Black people face persistent disparities in health care and health outcomes. These include higher uninsured rates, being more likely to go without care due to cost, and worse reported health status. Their life expectancy is nearly five years shorter compared to White people (72.8 years vs. 77.5 years). Black infants have a more than two times higher infant mortality rate than White infants (10.6 per 1,000 v. 4.4 per 1,000 as of 2021), and Black people are nearly three times more likely than White people to die due to pregnancy-related reasons (39.9 vs. 14.1 per 100,000 live births between 2017-2019)." Health is more than just medical care. Last week, we published and began the first stages of the Convergence Collaborative on Social Factors of Health Blueprint for Action release! The Collaborative met for several months to come to a consensus on solutions for creating the best policy environment for local efforts and partnerships to improve household and community health by addressing social factors of health (also known as social determinants of health or SDOH). These convenings were supported with generous financial support by CommonSpirit Health, the Episcopal Health Foundation, and Kaiser Permanente. Their commitment to the Convergence process of building consensus among people and organizations with different views and priorities made the project possible. #SDOH #SocialFactorsOfHealth #SocialDriversofHealth #SocialDeterminantsofHealth

As National Minority Health Month comes to a close, we echo the message from @MinorityHealth: Be the Source for Better Health for all! Here at H.O.P.E. Collective, we know that health equity serves everyone, especially people of color in rural communities. In rural spaces, we see firsthand how the power of collaboration can tackle health disparities. Here are some ways YOU can be a part of the change: 1. Support community gardens and farmers markets: Fresh produce is key to healthy living, but access can be limited. 2. Advocate for culturally-competent healthcare: Everyone deserves care that respects their background. ️ 3. Spread health literacy: Knowledge is power! Help others understand their health options. 4. Volunteer your time or skills: Clinics, food banks, and community centers often need a helping hand.
