Last year we were honoured to meet Jaina and Alina in one of our new collection centers in Prague - two sisters, in a desperate attempt to escape the war in Ukraine, seek refuge in the Czech Republic. Filled with a deep sense of gratitude towards the people who have welcomed them, they decide to give back by donating plasma at a local center. This story isn't just about donating plasma; it's about the community that comes together around a plasma center. It's about people who put humanity first and want to make a difference in the lives of those who will receive plasma-derived therapies. Their kindness shows that even in hardship, compassion prevails, reminding us of the power of collective action in making a difference. Thankful for Team Anders Many of us have an appreciation for all that life brings, good and bad – because even our worst moments can shape us in positive ways. For me, holidays serve as reminders to count our blessings, to embrace life’s challenges and support the community wherever it is. This time, it could not be much closer to home. While there are several avenues one could choose for a post like this, the cause of giving blood or donating marrow does not make it to the forefront very often. Let us anticipate that the grants will be allocated to deserving candidates capable of devising a communication strategy targeting the fundamental issue of Next of Kin Consent within our Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Communities. It is imperative to establish reliable communication channels with families, prioritising them over extravagant sporting events and highly compensated charity executives, funded by Australian taxpayers. Regrettably, Transplant Australia has received substantial funding from DonateLife since 2018, amounting to millions, yet no Australian games have transpired during this period. Despite taxpayers' direct contribution of $1.6 million towards the World Transplant Games in 2023, alongside over $2 million in other grants supporting Transplant Australia staff salaries, Next of Kin Consent rates have only decreased from 64% to a modest 55% since 2018. The funding strategy to support Professional Sports Sponsorship and single out one community partner over all others for such significant funding needs to be questioned.
