Public Transportation: Who Feels Safe? I used public transportation throughout my life as a safe, cheap, efficient way to traverse the city. The rise in violent crime in and around train, bus, and trolley hubs has become an absolute disgrace. Normal, everyday, regular people are now unable to get to work, school, or shop due to this negative environment we allowed. (yes WE...I know I know) Two individuals get into a physical altercation where one gets run over by a train and the other will stand trial for the event. These horrific events are occurring more and more. How did we, as a society get here? How do we get out of this seemingly bottomless pit of crime? What are you doing to keep yourself safe? https://lnkd.in/e_GSeFja

We stand with the government’s recent decision to ban dangerous "zombie-style" knives and machetes, effective from 24 September. These weapons, often designed to intimidate and cause harm, have no place in our communities. As part of our ongoing commitment to safety within the night-time economy, we fully support this measure, which strengthens the fight against knife crime. Keeping these weapons out of the wrong hands is a crucial step in making our streets, venues, and nightlife safer for everyone. The ban follows a Home Office-run surrender scheme, and we encourage anyone still in possession of these items to hand them into their local police station immediately. By working together, we can protect lives and make a real difference. Let’s continue to unite for a safer future. #SafeNights #TacklingKnifeCrime #SaferCommunities #ZombieKnivesBan

This will be my very first post in which I won't be as positive as usual. This video shows exactly why no officer should be on patrol alone. Yet, in this country, officers are even sent on foot patrol alone, even though most are unarmed and don't carry a taser. This is something I find challenging to understand in my transition journey. And I am not alone - when I tell my colleagues in Italy about this, they always struggle to believe it. In Italy, where I served in the Carabinieri police force, all officers were armed, there were no body-worn cameras, and we didn't have an equivalent of the IOPC, nor the same level of scrutiny seen in many common law countries. Nevertheless, our patrols always had a minimum of two officers, sometimes three, which is also the minimum suggested to handle a prisoner safely. In over a decade of service in Italy, I encountered in a period of a month or two the level of violence, disrespect, antagonism, and resistance that I face here in a single set or two. I know I am very new to this reality, and I don't want to criticise a country and my new police family that have given me this opportunity. Eventually, with time, I will understand and see things that I can't see now. I'm always open to changing my mind and broadening my view. However, if there hasn't been evidence-based research on the risks of solo patrols, now is probably the time to undertake it. I believe this culture of solo patrols is a "cultural legacy" that made sense when society was different. However, in recent years, things have changed, and exposing officers to such risks is, in a sense, disconnected from reality. #PoliceSafety #ModernPolicing #OfficerWellbeing #PatrolPolicy #PublicSafety
Watch the moments PS Foster, PS Ansell and PC Wolstencroft are confronted by a knife-wielding attacker as they responded to a road traffic collision. They were awarded at the Police Federation National Bravery Awards last night. Sadly, this is only one of many police officer assaults which happen each year. Superintendent Marcus Noden said, “Of the total assaults recorded, 75 of those between April 2023 and March 2024 have resulted in injury. What that means is 75 officers removed from their duties at the hands of others, some for months. “Losing these officers from their duties not only means our capacity to respond to incidents is reduced, but as is our capacity to help those that really need us." In times of emergency, first responders need to get to the scene quickly and safely. The Kannapolis Fire and Police Departments would like to remind you: 🚨Parking vehicles on both sides of the street, makes it nearly impossible for a fire truck to travel down the roadway. Although police vehicles are not as wide as a fire truck, parked vehicles on both sides of the street significantly slow response times. 🚨When you see emergency vehicle lights or hear sirens approaching, safely pull out of the way or move over to create a path for vehicles. 🚨Move over for emergency vehicles pulled over and stopped with flashing lights.

This report is scary. It's talking about a military-style invasion and occupation of Kensington, bringing the gang card program used by the LAPD to Philly, police occupying schools, chasing down kids on dirt bikes (which got a bunch of kids killed the last time), and relying heavily on stop and frisk that they're calling Terry stops, but are actually proven to be unconstitutional and cost the city $30 million in lawsuits during the Nutter Administration. We understand that gun violence and public safety is a definite issue in our city, but these tactics are not the answer. Please read this report. https://lnkd.in/e_6JBNhu

The key to preventing these incidents is attenuation. When we protect our workers with physical barriers, they survive. When we rely on drivers encountering a surprise situation, we have incidents and our workers die. Move over laws have great intentions, but merely highlight the delta between work as dreamed and work as real. Expecting drivers to know how to react is just not a good strategy.

Yesterday Ct State Police Trooper Pelletier tragically lost his life while conducting a traffic stop. Another driver struck and killed the trooper. I had a chance today to discuss CT’s move over law on FOX61/CW20. The move over law is not a stand alone law. Drivers need to understand they are required to: - Follow the speed limit. - Drive within established travel lanes. - Pay attention and always be observant for slow traffic and/or changing traffic conditions. - In Ct. when you observe roadside activity - A police officer, construction vehicle, tow truck, or even a disabled vehicle you are required to SLOW DOWN below the speed limit and if in an adjacent lane, MOVE OVER if you can do it safely. All operators, regardless of the lane you are in should slow down approaching this activity. This activity can happen anywhere so you need to always pay attention to the road ahead of you…not just the four feet in front of your vehicle. Watch our discussion here https://lnkd.in/gD3mnKEv

This is why as police officers our risk assessments are always HIGH or UNKNOWN. Low risk does not exist in policing because something as common as a road traffic collision can turn in to a deadly situation. Not to mention when the attacker is completely unprovoked and seemingly independent to the incident itself. The next time you criticize a police officer from your armchair, consider that these are things we have to deal with on a daily basis. We have families to go home to as well.
