So, here's the deal: in estate planning, you might appoint someone to be a guardian for your kids and someone else to be a trustee to manage their finances. Why the division? Well, it's all about playing to people's strengths and ensuring the best care for your loved ones. Guardianship is all about caring for the well-being of your children – their day-to-day needs, education, and overall welfare. That's a big job, and you want someone who's up for the task, right? On the other hand, trustees handle the financial side of things, managing assets, investments, and distributions. It's like having two superheroes looking out for your kids, each with their own superpowers! By having different individuals in these roles, you're ensuring a balance of skills and expertise. Plus, it adds a layer of checks and balances to protect your children's interests. So, while it might seem a bit complex, it's all about setting up the best support system for your family. #EstatePlanning101 #CaliforniaLaw 💼

Let's answer another one of the most frequently asked questions: My loved one with special needs is already older. Isn’t it too late to develop a plan? Some people think it’s too late to begin planning if their loved one with special needs is already 17 and going to transition into adulthood soon. Others think it’s too late if their loved one is 20, 30, or even 50. The truth is that it’s never too late. Even if your loved one is middle-aged, working with a special needs life planning team now is vastly preferable to never doing it at all. In fact, planning is even more critical later on in a person’s life, as this is when the most significant transition can take place. When a primary caretaker(s) passes away it will be essential to have a plan in place that helps takes care of the funding, legal, and support needs that are critical to life. #finance #specialneedsplanning #specialneedstrust

Organizational Consultant & Leadership Coach, Specializing in Inclusive Leadership and Conscious Change • Social Scientist • Speaker • Author • Professor Emerita of Leadership & Change, UH
𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 10 “𝐈 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐞’𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦” By Ashley Ochoa (summarized from 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦, by Jean Kantambu Latting and V. Jean Ramsey) “I was preparing for maternity leave from a small company where I reported to the Executive Director (Phil). He agreed to hire a new employee (Marcy) two months before I was scheduled to leave. “I did not have a good relationship with Cecil [HR/Accounting Manager]. But Marcy had worked with Cecil at a previous company, and they were already friends. “About a month before my leave, Cecil turned in her two weeks’ notice. What had been a steady-paced training process became a frenzied battle for Marcy’s time. Marcy seemed confused and uncertain. It weighed so heavily on my mind, I did something out of the norm—I called her on my way home. “I finally understood the disconnect: Marcy had been misinformed. Phil and I had the same expectations, but Cecil had conveyed a different impression to Marcy. “At this point, all I could do was tell Marcy that what she’d been told by Cecil had never been the plan and apologize for the misinformation. “I was so glad I’d spent time with Marcy and pleased that we had built enough trust between us to make it possible for this difficult conversation. It took the Friday night phone call to break through to a new level of understanding.” 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐬𝐡𝐥𝐞𝐲’𝐬 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 When Cecil unexpectedly resigned, Marcy went to Ashley for clarity. Ashley gave full attention to Marcy, an attribute of powerful listening skills. Marcy broached an uncomfortable topic; Ashley also deserves credit for establishing the environment that allowed Marcy to take this risk. Ashley made good use of conscious use of self. It kept nagging at her that there was something she was missing. This was also an example of Ashley understanding her power and using it responsibly. Marcy, as a nondominant, would not have felt comfortable calling Ashley after hours. Ashley Ochoa is a Licensed Master of Social Work in Houston, Texas. She earned her BSW from Brigham Young University–Idaho in 2009 and MSW from the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work (GCSW) in 2011. At the GCSW, Ashley took Dr. Latting’s leadership course and was introduced to the Conscious Change skills. Implementation Project Manager | Career Transition Coach | I lead teams in applying strategic solutions that drive meaningful change
❌ For a long time, I was the victim of being stuck in the same routine, wanting more but not changing a thing.... I was a supervisor at a child welfare agency for 5 years, managing a team of 4-6 case managers. Each case manager had about 40 children on their case loads and I had 25. 😨 To put that into perspective, a healthy organization had their case managers at about 25 children with supervisors managing 0. Everyday for 2 years I complained to myself, my husband, my boss. Until one day, my boss said "If you don't like it, why don't you just leave?" My reply: "I have no idea....." I really had to take some time to think about WHY I stayed for so long. Here are some reasons I came up with: 🔎 I got comfortable in the lifestyle. 🔎 I had NO idea who I was as a person outside of child welfare. 🔎 I was afraid of not being good at something new. 🔎 I didn't know where to start. 🔎 I was terrified that if I left, I would be more miserable than I was in that role. 🔎 I knew I was making a huge impact on my team and the population we were serving. 🔎 I became highly skilled in that industry. It felt good to be relied upon. If you're considering transitioning careers or industries, deep dive into your 'why'. Fast forward 3 years and I: 💯 Have a healthy work / life balance 💯 Earn more than I ever have 💯 See the beauty in continued learning 💯 Realize my potential 💯 Genuinely love the work I do You can have that too. It takes self-reflection, time, and effort, but it can be done. What are your career or industry stories? Are you considering transitioning? Are you in the middle of a transition? Do you have a successful pivot story? 💜 If I can help in any way, don't hesitate to reach out! I'm #opentoconnect and here to #support! #careertransitions #upskilling #learningjourney #newcareer #opportunities #childwelfare #socialwork #casemanagement #tech #projectmanagement #selfreflection #effort #earningpotential #continuedlearning #transition #transferrableskills #careercoaching
