FDA, as outlined in the "Food Is Medicine Summit," discussed strategies. Secretary of Agriculture Thomas Vilsack, sharing a personal commitment due to his weight struggles, emphasized the emotional toll of obesity and advocated for state summer feeding programs. FDA Commissioner Robert Califf highlighted the urgent need for better information on food packages, addressing issues like added sugars and trans fats on labels. The FDA aims to incentivize healthier diets by defining the "healthy" claim on labels. Califf stressed the role of physicians in nutrition education and emphasized the necessity of scientific research to counter the impact of sophisticated food industry advertising on consumer choices. Whether it's defining criteria for "healthy" labels or assisting in community-based nutrition initiatives, our specialists are prepared to contribute to comprehensive strategies for promoting healthier eating habits and addressing the complex challenges associated with nutrition and obesity. Our team is equipped to collaborate with healthcare professionals to enhance patient education on nutrition, leveraging the trust patients place in physicians. The concept of Food as Medicine (FaM) is transforming how we approach health, integrating nutrition-based solutions into healthcare strategies. With almost 60% of Americans changing their eating habits post-pandemic, FaM initiatives like medically tailored meals and produce prescriptions are vital for addressing food insecurity and diet-related diseases. Driven by $8 billion in public-private investments, FaM is making healthy food accessible, reducing healthcare costs, and improving outcomes, particularly in underserved communities. #FoodAsMedicine #PublicHealth #Nutrition #HealthcareInnovation #SDOH #FoodSecurity https://lnkd.in/eQz8-mDb

“…we need to focus on changing food industry behavior to ensure that unhealthy foods are not ubiquitous and not as cheap and heavily marketed while ensuring that our existing nutrition assistance programs are accessible and health promoting. We already know that investing in these interventions can make a real and sustained difference in people’s lives.” Really good read!!!

We are at-risk for a decrease in population IQ! This well-written article is important for everyone to read! Public health matters- the historical perspective and the impact of today’s diet trends. With the increased consumption of plant-based milks (and less cow milk) and the increasing reliance of eating out of the home and commercially processed foods, the lack of iodine in our diets and its real impact is not far-fetched.

⭐ Program Spotlight: Food and Nutrition ⭐ Why We Do The Work We Do The Problem: The spread of ultra-processed products (UPPs) worldwide is causing rising rates of obesity and diet-related non-communicable diseases. UPPs are replacing traditional nutritional diets quickly and the diseases they are causing worsen public health and place a high burden on government healthcare costs and the environment. The food and beverage industry wields great influence over food and nutrition policy to prevent regulation of their unhealthy products. What We’re Doing to Address it: Our Food and Nutrition team supports locally-led advocacy campaigns across the world to pass evidence-based conflict of interest-free policies that help increase access to nutritious foods and reduce demand for unhealthy products. To date we have supported the passage of 22 national food and nutrition policies in 15 countries. You have to read this insightful TIME Magazine article that resonated with us at Planet Harvest. Dr. Hilary Seligman, director of University of California, San Francisco’s Food Policy, Health, and Hunger Research Program, shares a powerful story about a patient who ate SPAM and cinnamon rolls for lunch because it was the only affordable option. This is a stark reminder of why our work is so important, increasing access to nutritious produce. Here are some key takeaways: -The Critical Need for Nutritious Food: One in eight U.S. households lacks access to affordable, nutritious food. Diet-related conditions like cardiovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes are among the largest healthcare costs, exceeding $1.1 trillion annually. -Challenges and Opportunities Ahead: To fully integrate Food Is Medicine into healthcare, we need to secure sustainable funding, expand coverage, and increase nutrition education. Innovative solutions, like using produce benefits on debit cards at grocery stores, are essential to bridging the gap between healthcare and access to healthy foods. At Planet Harvest, we’re proud to be part of the solution. We team up with organizations like Brighter Bites to bring fresh produce to schools and work with superheroes like Shreela Sharma, PhD, RDN, LD, professor of epidemiology at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Public Health and co-founder of Brighter Bites, on initiatives that provide nutritious food to prenatal and postnatal mothers. It’s all about making healthy food accessible and improving lives. The road ahead is challenging, but together, we can make a real difference! How do you think we can make nutritious food a standard part of healthcare for everyone? #FoodIsMedicine #Nutrition #HealthEquity #PlanetHarvest #BrighterBites #UTHealth https://lnkd.in/ghUW3-dG

March is National Nutrition Month and there is so much to be excited about. Thanks to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics National Nutrition Campaign we are reminded that nutrition matters. This year we focus on issues Beyond the Table, here are some of the exciting movements taking place. 🍎President Joe Biden and The White House administration is working towards improving the nutritional quality of our food supply, increasing access of healthier food options for everyone regardless of income status or demographics and reducing the on-set of chronic diseases. 🍎The Food is Medicine movement from American Heart Association and The Rockefeller Foundation is working to provide new possible food solutions for individuals to have equitable access to healthier food options. 🍎The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is working on getting legislation to pass the Medical Nutrition Therapy Act and the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act that will help to increase the amount of conditions that insurance and payers will cover nutrition counseling for. 👩🏻🌾 Wouldn’t it be great if everyone had access to healthier food options? Eating nutritious foods shouldn’t be a mystery or a challenge. AND a Registered Dietitian should be part of a standard health check up. #foodismedicine #nutrition Enjoy the PSA from my little one, turn on your sound and listen to the post “Everybody Eat Your Vegetables” 🥕🍆🥦🥑🌶️🥬🍅🍄
