Let's give a standing ovation to our unsung heroes: community oncology pharmacists! While academic medical centers often steal the spotlight for their pharmacy integration (and often big marketing budgets), it's high time we acknowledge the colossal impact oncology pharmacists have in community practices After all, the majority of oncology care unfolds right in these very settings, making their potential impact nothing short of monumental The team at McKesson (Melissa Carroll, Shannon Hough, et al) have published an analysis of the impact and value of integrating a 0.5 FTE remote clinical oncology pharmacist in four community practices in their network And the results are mind blowing 🤯 Over 1 year: 🔎 5716 order reviews were completed 🙋♀️ intervention rate of 57% - most common were: interventions with clinical impact on the patient (36%), dose rounding (35%) and therapeutic interchange (30%) 💰 interventions improved the practice margins by $1,455,033 and reduced total medication costs by $5,962,551 🔄 average return on investment was 415% (range 100–915%) This is from 4 part-time FTEs… 😲 A lot of cost savings stemmed from the simple yet powerful act of dose rounding - a skill that every pharmacist can wield from day one So, let's raise the curtain and applaud our community oncology pharmacists who are tirelessly working behind the scenes, making major impacts for oncology patients across every practice setting 👏👏👏👏👏 --- 📌 When you’re ready to prioritize learning oncology, the Enjoy Learning Oncology (ELO) program can help you! Cannot agree more. The impact of high quality interventions is innumerable (though we need actual numbers for our finance folks). Love the study they completed. Our stellar resident John Lee did a similar assessment for our practice focusing on toxicity prevention/mitigation interventions. The numbers are surprising. Always appreciate seeing our hard work and value reflected. Looking forward to publishing those numbers soon to help other centers justify their own amazing Pharmacy teams.
Thanks so much for sharing this work Kelley D. Carlstrom, PharmD, BCOP. The role of an oncology pharmacist in community practices like The US Oncology Network is so valuable and we have a spectacular team!
Fabulous. Having had the privilege to work with clinic pharmacists in outpatient medical oncology - the difference really was this significant and clear to me all along, but it’s awesome to see this formally demonstrated!
Very insightful! I 100% agree, the interventions we make as community oncology pharmacists is very significant.
I agree!
