The number of youngsters with an education, health and care plan for SEND in England has soared by the highest rate in six years. Almost half of plans are still not being issued within the statutory 20-day window. As of January this year, 575,963 plans for youngsters aged up to 25 years old with special educational needs and disabilities were in place. This is up 58,914, or 11.4 per cent, on the previous year. The increase is the highest seen since 2018, when the number of EHCPs and predecessor statements rose by roughly the same proportion. It is vital whoever forms the next government brings forward proposals without delay to reform the SEND system, with a focus on improving levels of mainstream inclusion. #EHCP #SEND

I use the 😂 emoji because this must be a joke, no? How do these brief questions pose a profound inquiry into evaluating human lives? Who approved these questions, and what methods will be employed to organise the data? I am concerned about the emphasis on mainstream settings for SEND. This was a cause for worry during the Labour campaign as mainstream schools often lacked sufficient space, specialist teaching assistants, and the necessary support. Perhaps we should consider constructing more SEND-specific schools. I have only heard Rishi Sunak mention this and not Sir Keir, if at all. Additionally, I want to emphasise the importance of career development for individuals with SEND, which goes beyond simply finding employment. We need a formal exploration and advocacy for SEND careers within education, allowing individuals to pursue their aspirations with agency and autonomy.
The Council for Disabled Children have been commissioned to support the Department for Education with the development of National Standards by providing examples of best practice where: - Mainstream education settings are delivering high quality provision to support children with SEND; and/or - Examples of high-quality effective SEND provision that is available locally (not by schools) and set out in the local offer. We have put together a survey, with the aim that the responses will help us gain further understanding of the ways in which support is provided to children and young people with SEND and how to best maximise this support. Please complete the survey here: https://buff.ly/4cSuHjt The survey is anonymous and should not take more than 10 minutes. The deadline to complete the survey is the 9th of August 2024. For any questions or queries, please contact the CDC team (cdc@ncb.org.uk).

According to the most recent #UNICEF report of Early Childhood Education and Development #ECD, 60% of children in low-income countries do not have access to early care and learning opportunities. To meet national targets of providing at least one year of organized learning before primary school, low-income and lower-middle-income countries must fill an annual financial gap of USD 21 billion and recruit at least six million more educators before 2030. Ignoring the fact that USD21 billion is near impossible number to reach for these countries, it still only addresses a small part of the major problem, which is 1) Accessibility and 2) Affordability. Even if the USD 21 billion affordability hurdle can somehow be overcome and a sufficient number of qualified teachers can be provided, the accessibility hurdle will still remain. Nearly half of children from low-income countries live in rural areas, with no means to access any early age educational facilities, whilst the USD21 billion figure does not include the costs related to books, safe kindergartens or nursery schools, and any educational equipment. The current model is providing early age education is simply not viable. Like it or dislike it, but high quality, screen based early age educational solutions is the only affordable and accessible option with a realistic possibility of success. https://lnkd.in/eFywZhUS

Latest figures from the Department for Education show there are more than 1.6 million pupils in England with special educational needs (SEN), an increase of 101,000 since 2023. The number includes both pupils who have Education, Health and Care (EHC) plans and those who receive SEN support. These numbers confirm what we already know from enquiries to our helpline. The SEN system is not working as it should. This is why Contact has published three asks that will tackle the biggest issues within the education system in England for pupils with SEN. "A report published last week by the Local Government Association (LGA) and the County Councils Network (CCN) pointed out: 'At present mainstream schools and settings do not have the resources, capacity or support they need to include children and young people with Send as well as they could.'" Educater is a flexible, bespoke system that allows schools to support SEND pupils by tracking and collecting evidence for all interventions, access arrangements and non-exam assessed progress reviews and reports. #PupilProgress #SEND
