The best way to get more comfortable with public speaking is to do it more often. I dreaded giving presentations in school. I’d somehow find a way to be sick hours before it was ever my turn to stand up in front of the class. How in the world did I go from that to *enjoying* giving talks in front of hundreds of people? To spending four (4) hours conducting a workshop for 50 folks in the morning, only to do it again in the afternoon? If you want to become a more confident public speaker, start small. Attend a local meetup or smaller conference. Speak on a panel! The more time you spend speaking in public, the more comfortable you become. Your confidence will increase and you’ll find you care a whole lot less about impressing every single person in the audience :) (Photo is a throwback from September 2022)

I couldn’t agree more. Smaller conferences provide a great opportunity to gain experience with a welcoming audience. I recently spoke at the AWS Midwest Community Day conference in June, which was my first time presenting externally at a tech event. The audience was incredibly supportive and encouraging, which helped me overcome my hesitation about public speaking. It was a fantastic experience that boosted my confidence to consider future presentations. If you’re interested in getting started, I highly recommend seeking out smaller, community-driven conferences. You’ll find many passionate individuals who share your interests and form a friendly audience.
