This mare was in colic! ⚠️ Although it looks like she is just annoyed, we know the mare really well so we knew that something was wrong! 📖 Full story: The mare had foaled less than a week ago and all of a sudden she started acting like this. Now, if we look closely we can see that she is swiching her tail and head a lot. BUT, so is the foal. And you tell us, it is kind of nice weather, probably flies. NO! Just because a horse is not throwing him/herself to the ground, it doesn't mean that it isn't a colic. If we look closely we can even see that she kind of kicks the belly and even slightly looks at it, but it is not obvious. This is what we call a mild colic and it can be very common in postpartum mares in the first week. This happens because there is a lot of free space and the intestines move around and get displaced. ⚠️ HERE IS THE IMPORTANT THING: A vet came and thought that the mare was fine, there were no alterations in her vitals, she was kind of eating, and this was not a concerning behaviour per se, but we knew the mare. We've been working with this mare for years, we knew this is a very stoic mare. We called him again and he treated her for colic. The mare fully recovered! 🌟 LIFE LESSON: Knowing equine behaviour is very important, but more than that, it is very important to know your OWN horse. There is a lot of individual variation, and although some horses are drama queens others not so much, and they try to hide their feelings. Environment Determines Growth The lid on the jar conditions the flea to under achieve. You may have heard this story before. A flea placed inside a jar will very quickly learn its limitations and begin to jump with less enthusiasm. After spending some time in the jar it becomes conditioned to jump just short of the lid to avoid the pain of hitting its body against it again and again. Once this conditioning has happened, the lid can be removed, and although the flea is more than capable of jumping out the jar, it does not. Our environment can limit our growth. If we are constantly rubbing shoulders with negative, small- minded people, we too will become just like them. It is true that a fish remains small if it is placed in a small pond but can grow to its full size if left to enter the ocean. You and I need to be careful that we avoid that natural tendency to be a big fish in a small pond. Is your chosen environment limiting or stretching you? How? #Inspiration #MondayMotivation

Well...that was less than ideal! Walking Bogey this morning, not even a quarter of the way into our walk, his Collar came unsnapped. There I was with a leash and a collar and no dog at the end of it, YIKES!. I'm certain in his 6-month puppy mind it was something like, yeah, Freedom! In this instant, I had a choice: I could panic or I could go into problem-solving. Instantly it was problem-solving mode for me. I held up my hands to stop oncoming traffic as I worked to gain Bogey's attention with a treat. Thankfully he didn't run into one of the nearby farm fields. It looked a bit more like him running circles trying to get me to play. Ah, the joy and play of a puppy! Within a matter of minutes he was back on his leach, traffic was moving and we were right back onto our walk. In life, "less than ideal," things can come at us at any given time. Day 341 - It’s been almost a month since I began researching dog shipping services to help us safely transfer our dogs Ollie and Rudy from California to Japan. I began with a list of five such services, reaching out to each with identical information and a quote request. Two never responded. Of the three which did, two of these spent time with me on the phone to ask and answer questions before sending me vetted quotes. The details and costs were nearly identical, though one company’s process, paperwork and offer were much more straightforward, with no hard sales pitch or hidden details. Plus, the agent from this latter company was respectful of my request for time to think and perform due diligence. And this company’s reviews were best, with a track record extending back more than three decades. I spoke with Yumiko about it all yesterday and we are leaning towards selecting this more established and seemingly better run company. I’ve made arrangements for another meeting with them on Friday (I have the day off) in order to discuss logistics.
