This Tuesday, February 20th at 11:00 am ET, join the Bipartisan Policy Center and Terwilliger Center’s Housing Leaders Speaker Series for a fireside chat with Greg Gianforte, Montana’s 25th governor and a vocal housing champion committed to finding bipartisan solutions to expanding affordable housing opportunities in his state. #Rural #RuralDevelopment #RuralHousing #RuralCommunities #HabitatForHumanity #AffordableHousing #Homeownership #AffordableHomeownership

Producing new housing has to be a "shared responsibility," said @New York City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams at the @NYU Furman Center's Policy Breakfast in February. New York City official are hopeful that two new packages of laws—the City Council’s Fair Housing Framework and Mayor Eric Adams’ proposed City of Yes for Housing Opportunity plan—will work in tandem to fairly and equitably produce new housing across the city and ensure every single neighborhood contributes to solving the city’s acute housing crisis. "We have to normalize a shared responsibility of addressing the housing crisis across all neighborhoods and establish clear expectations and targets that are localized and transparent to all of us,” said Speaker Adams during the panel. “We’re all in this together.” Read @NYU Furman Center's @Benjamin Hitchcock, @Shannon Flores, and @Elizabeth (Nikki) Miller story https://buff.ly/48qiXly #newyorkcity #housing #affordablehousing #equity #fairhousing #housingcrisis

Here is an easy to read summary of what Maine and Portland are doing in regards to the housing crisis.
As we greet a new year, #housing availability and affordability remain a serious concern across the United States. In the land where Home Rule reigns supreme, the State of #Maine is seeking to address its crisis with the passage of a new housing law requiring all local governments change their #zoning, which goes into effect this year. Separately, the City of Portland, Maine, has enacted several local housing reforms over the last decade, including rent control and inclusionary zoning. 🏠 Learn more about Maine’s new housing law and the results (so far) of the City of Portland’s housing reforms in Senior Housing Specialist (and Maine resident) Robert O'Brien’s latest article for our Economic Development Navigator blog 👉 https://lnkd.in/ghJfbPWD 🎯 Subscribe to the monthly Economic Development Navigator e-newsletter at https://lnkd.in/gZUUJexH #rentcontrol #inclusionaryzoning #economicdevelopment #affordablehousing

🏡 The Reducing Regulatory Barriers to Housing Act was officially introduced by Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) and Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE)! Smart Growth America—with support from our LOCUS: Responsible Real Estate Developers and Investors coalition—is proud to have endorsed this piece of legislation that aims to reimagine zoning laws and empower local governments to develop more affordable housing in the U.S. 👏 "Historically, zoning practices have been used to divide communities and concentrate poverty in under-resourced areas. By transforming our zoning regulations, more people would have access to affordable and diverse types of housing, high-paying jobs, and healthy and safe communities." The Housing Act of 1949, also known as the Taft-Ellender-Wagner Act, was a landmark piece of legislation in the United States. Enacted on July 15, 1949, this act was part of a broader post-World War II effort to address housing shortages, urban decay, and inadequate living conditions. The Housing Act of 1949 had several key provisions: 1. Urban Renewal: The act aimed to eliminate slums and blighted areas through urban renewal projects. It provided federal funding to local governments for the clearance of deteriorated housing and the redevelopment of those areas. 2. Public Housing: The legislation expanded public housing programs, providing federal funds to construct low-income housing projects. This was intended to offer affordable and decent housing options to those in need. 3. Homeownership Assistance: The act included provisions to support homeownership, offering financial assistance to individuals and families seeking to purchase homes. This was part of an effort to promote broader access to homeownership. 4. Planning Grants: The Housing Act of 1949 authorized planning grants to assist local communities in developing comprehensive plans for their housing and urban development. #ushistory #policy #affordablehousing

We're calling for a long-term plan for housing alongside the National Housing Federation ahead of the general election next week. Our Head of Operations, Carl Doogan talks about why he’s proud to work for us and why it's important that we support the campaign: “I’m proud to work for Local Space where we strive to provide safe and quality homes for those in need. However, we are in a housing crisis where there are eight million people with unmet housing need, and over a million families on housing waiting lists. That’s why we need a long-term plan for housing to ensure a warm and decent home for more families." #PlanForHousing

8moI found this conversation very insightful, with lessons that can be applied in any state. In their blog post on the topic, the Bipartisan Policy Center writes, "In 2022, Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte issued an executive order establishing a housing task force of diverse stakeholders to develop recommendations for addressing the housing affordability problems facing the state. The task force included Republicans and Democrats from the state legislature, as well as representatives from state agencies, businesses and industry groups, nonprofits, academia, and local communities. The task force put out two reports in 2022 and, in 2023, the state passed a series of laws based on many of the task force’s recommendations. Those laws focused on allowing for increased density in existing towns and cities to prevent sprawl and preserve Montana’s natural beauty."
