Summer Intern @ AkzoNobel || MDI Gurgaon PGDM-HRM '25 || Lean Six-Sigma Green Belt Certified || Ex-CGI
“You left MBA for MBA-HR!? That’s career suicide!” 😱 This was the reaction most people around me had when I left PGDM and opted for PGDM-HRM at MDI. Fast forward to today: when juniors often reach out to gain clarity on HR and whether they should opt for it, I reminisce about my dilemma a year ago. Before we move ahead, here’s a reality check: ♦ Specialized Course: MBA-HR focuses heavily on HR/OB subjects, unlike a general MBA where you can select electives based on interest. If you don't like HR, you may feel stuck. ♦ Career Path: Most careers start in corporate HR, plant HR, or HR consulting. Switching to other domains like marketing is possible but uncommon. ♦ Job Availability: HR jobs are less frequent on career portals compared to marketing or finance. Networking is crucial as many roles are filled before being advertised. ♦ C-Suite Roles: HR roles are still often absent from the C-suite in many organizations. That begs the question, when and why should you go for an MBA in HR? Here are my thoughts on this: ✅ Interest in HR: If you're passionate about HR and eager to learn how it helps businesses achieve goals, it's a field with many opportunities for those who work hard. ✅ Top Business Schools: If you gain admission to top HR programs like XLRI, MDI, or TISS, it's worth it. Their exposure and opportunities make an excellent career launchpad. ✅ Long-Term Goals: If your long-term goals align with the program and you believe you can contribute more value to the industry through HR, pursue it. ✅ Strategic Roles: Those with prior HR experience who want strategic roles should consider an MBA. Post-MBA, strategic HR positions require collaboration across the organization. ✅ HR-Tech Enthusiasts: If you're technically skilled, HR-Tech offers great potential. Gen-AI, HRMS, ATS, LMS, etc. are transforming HR operations. Why shouldn’t you pursue HR? ⛔ Good with People: Every management area requires strong interpersonal skills, so this shouldn't be your primary reason for choosing HR. ⛔ HR is Easy: Picture Michael Scott screaming, “No, God, please no!” to understand the fallacy of this statement. Pfaff won't help when leadership demands ROI on your "castle in the clouds" project. ⛔ Work-Life Balance: HR isn't about Fun Fridays. Large companies don't hire top graduates with generous salaries to simply sit back and watch office drama. Ultimately, it’s about who you are and what your interests and ambitions are. If you’re ready to work hard and continuously improve, you can succeed in any field. There are many myths surrounding HR, but if you're confident about it, go for it. Taking a leap of faith is not career suicide. #MBA #HR #MDI #XLRI #TISS #IIM #learning
