We talk a lot about sustainability when regarding Solar Power. It's true, Solar is the future, but what many people don't realize yet is that it's actually pretty pricey to install and actually begin creating and investing energy. While perusing through SolarPowerWorldOnline.com, I came across this intriguing article showcasing an Illinois school who has the opportunity to introduce their students to the great benefits of Solar Power! If more young folk are introduced to this energy and guided through on how to make it possible in their neighborhoods, it would make our future that much brighter. #solarpower #solar #schoolsolarpower #solarpanels #solaristhefuture https://lnkd.in/gSvgUkvN

Incredible progress for clean energy in education! Over 1.8 GW of solar is now installed at nearly 9,000 U.S. schools, providing major cost savings and sustainability. With energy costs second only to teacher salaries, solar is freeing up vital funds for educational programs—at little to no upfront cost for schools. 🌱⚡ This shift to solar is more than just about savings—it's about shaping a greener future for our students and communities. There's never been a better time to embrace solar! Virginia’s largest solar array on a school rooftop just came online A 1.8-megawatt (MW) school rooftop solar array, the largest in Virginia, is now online – and the US needs to do a whole lot more of this. Stafford County Public Schools partnered with New York-based Madison Energy Infrastructure (MEI) to install the rooftop solar array at North Stafford High School. It’s made up of 3,300 solar panels, and it’s going to save the school system an estimated $2.8 million in electric bills over the next 25 years. The rooftop will also generate 54 million kilowatt hours of clean energy and offset 41,583 tons of CO2. Some good news in today's Globe and Mail newspaper noting how solar power recently accounted for 20% of the world'd daily electricity use: https://lnkd.in/eqYFVtDk And some more good news about solar power in British Columbia, Canada: https://lnkd.in/ebyH2gRf The announcement made by BC Hydro (the electric power utility for British Columbia) about new solar subsidies was made at Richmond Secondary School. Thanks to some dedicated and hard working students and staff, Richmond Secondary has one of the largest school solar arrays in the province. Thus, it is a fitting location for the BC Hydro announcement to be made. Here is a challenge to all educators in British Columbia (and beyond): encourage students to work toward the installation of solar arrays at your schools! It is project based, experiential learning (fund raising, navigating government bureaucracy), involves interpersonal/social skill building (presentations, networking), and is authentic (has meaningful impact). It can also be academically interdisciplinary. In short, encouraging students at your schools to work toward installing solar panels is a way to empower youth to address the climate crisis, promote hope and positivity, and improve youth mental health. Most of all, it is a way to help develop youth climate leadership in a world that needs it. Here is an encouraging video about the Richmond Secondary "Green Team" solar project that can serve as a pilot and encouragement for other schools: https://lnkd.in/eyeyjMz5 With more and more government and private sector subsidies being offered for solar power installations around the world, and with advances in solar technology and decrease in costs - the time to install solar power in all schools is now. Imagine a global social-network led by students/teachers aimed at installing solar panels at all schools (whenever possible). Students would be given agency, and would be the leaders. This would not be a top-down project. Please message me if you are interested in working together on this concept, or if you already have such a project underway. I have taken a sabbatical from teaching for the next year and have the time and energy to devote to the idea. Cheers Wonhee Choi Jason Pang Edward Zhang Sue Roppel Travis T.
