[French Rail News] The fate of Railcoop, the French rail cooperative, is being decided today. 🚄 The rail cooperative wanted to relaunch the Bordeaux-Limoges-Lyon train line abandoned more than 10 years ago by Groupe SNCF. A great project led by Nicolas Debaisieux and his team. We believed in it, because Railcoop was :  - 15,000 members  - 10 million euros raised  - Second-hand trains found (a new train costs 18 million euros). The idea was excellent: to link Bordeaux to Lyon without having to go back via Paris, to open up the West and the East. In fact, this line should never have stopped. So why has Railcoop reached what its chairman calls a ‘treasury impasse’? 1) It has not found the funds to renovate the railway equipment.  2) Another barrier to entry is the reluctance of banks to lend to a cooperative.  3) A market of large portfolios: the entry ticket to open a rail market is between 500 million and 1 billion (source: Agence Transmissions / France culture). This explains why mostly the mega-operators who were previously monopolies, such as the Groupe SNCF, Trenitalia in Italy and Renfe in Spain, are opening up lines. ❤️ Whatever happens today, Railcoop will have paved the way for others, bringing the social issue of trains back to the forefront and demonstrating the public's enthusiasm for new lines. Swiss national railways (SBB) is working on a new five-hour service between St Pancras and Basel through the Channel Tunnel using Eurostar trains; while Spanish firm Evolyn wants to open a direct link to Frankfurt, Cologne, Zurich and Geneva. These come amid a string of possible rival services to the Eurostar being planned, with  Sir Richard Branson allegedly looking into Virgin operating the current route – and Dutch train start-up Heuro hoping to launch a rival service within the next five years. As a long-distance destination, we are looking into a direct train from Switzerland to London, the most frequently flown city in Europe. Basel to London in around five hours, that's possible.'

EUROPE’S 300KM/H + HIGH SPEED TRAINS 🚆 🇪🇺 I’m on a 490km journey in one of Europe high speed trains going from France to Zurich and this thing is an absolute marvel. Even though it isn’t cheap for an weaker currency carrying African This super high speed train travels at 300km/h - with the ability to go to 400km/h if it wasn’t limited by track regulations - making it the fastest train in Europe. This train might not be faster than flying or necessarily cheaper, I mean this ticket cost return ticket for two people cost R6600, but this train offers more flexibility on things like luggage weight, goods that be carried and it better boarding experience and more scenic routes. Rail transport plays a key role in such Europe’s transport system and its set to continue. Between 2014–2020 Eur 18bn was injected into rail projects throughout the EU, 2021–2027 EUR 17 billion. What if... laying only a mile of new track enabled international rail travel directly between the North of the UK and mainland Europe? HS1 and HS2 will run within a mile of each other near Camden Town. Not only would I like to see any incoming Government commit to running HS2 to Manchester, Leeds and beyond, it should also announce a new spur outside Euston that joins HS2 to HS1 to allow direct trains from Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham to Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam and beyond. Any Government serious about 'levelling-up' the UK would be wise to consider the benefits of high-speed rail travel between the North's great cities and Europe. #hs2 #rail #travel Eurostar HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd

Dear European Commission: Portugal is the only country in Europe that has no rail connection to... Europe. It is a shame for our country leaders - but it is also a shame for Europe. How can we escape pollutting plane travel, insustainable car drive or cheap bus travel, if we have no possibility to arrive anywhere by rail? It is also amusing, albeit tragic, that you trace in the map a train from Lisbon to Coruña or to Madrid, when one has to endure difficult, long and exausting train connections (min 3 exchanges!) if we want to travel by rail to those two destinations. Ask train ticket boots about this and clercks will look surprised in your face: who wants to spend a whole day travelling and waiting in peripherical stations for non-reliable trains to make a mere 600 kms? Make an effort, remember we are already peripheric and this blindsighted policies are leaving Portugal and the inclusive and sustainable Europe even more behind. 🌱

Trans-European Networks are necessary. They boost welfare, mobility and decarbonisation. But if we want this to become a reality for all Europeans - particularly those living in rural and border areas - we need to go the last mile. We have to work harder at local, regional, national and European level to close the smaller missing railway gaps between EU Member States and (re-)activate regional railway networks.
