I'm shocked how many real estate developers are unaware of the interactive maps that show nearly 1,000 cities coming together, creating a vision for an economic North Star that the town can win together, and then literally putting out an application with names, locations, and goals of the community. Let's pretend a developer might want to know what cities will be rising in 5 years... I'd suggest looking at the ones where the community comes together and pitches a compelling vision for the future. Nearly 1,000 apply and then... only a few get picked to be funded.... so what does that mean... go to where the funded ones are... nope. Go partner with the communities that didn't get picked and kick some ass together. They are organized, have a vision, and community engagement. They need some funding and partnership... Hello!!! I'd move to one of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Engines or Hubs... then volunteer in the community and start building a company aligned with the hub. Can we talk about affordable / workforce housing yet again? Yes, I know I harp on this topic a bit, because it truly keeps me up at night. During the Des Moines Techstars Startup Weekend event in January (thank you Colleen Kinsey, PMP and Brandon Rockow for organizing!), I pitched the idea of using pre-fab components, like legos, to build multifamily housing more affordably. I envisioned doing this in the suburbs or urban areas. Blake Bayliss, Justin Sparland, and I spent the weekend digging into this, and were quickly informed that the lack of housing is hitting RURAL communities in Iowa. It's preventing these communities that have been hit by the loss of manufacturing in past decades from growing, from attracting business, from improving amenities for current residents. Mind blown. "Ok, Nora, so what's the point?" I want to put this out to the universe. Who is doing multifamily housing using newer construction methods, components, etc? Who is bringing down the cost in any part of the country? What models are out there? Alternatively, who else is interested in fixing this issue? Seriously.
