National Defense University is the Chairman's university, so it was with great pleasure that this morning we heard directly from the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General C.Q. Brown, on an interesting range of topics. Quoting from his initial message to the joint force, "Our Nation needs us ready to fight today’s battles but also to prepare for tomorrow’s wars. We must prepare by modernizing and aggressively leading with new concepts and approaches. Know that my conviction to Accelerate Change has not wavered. The journey of change must continue to strengthen our national security and our warfighting advantage. Through all, trust is the foundation of our profession. Trust across the force, that we will do right by each other. The trust of our families, that we will care for them through trial and triumph. The trust of our Nation and elected leaders, in our commitment to our oath and profession. As Chairman, I will strive every day to strengthen these bonds." https://lnkd.in/gRJy5J_a

Who are your wingmen? Do you have people on your team who will have your back, who will provide mutual support when you need it most?   On one of my worst days, I had an incredible wingman, Lieutenant Colonel Rick Turner, who provided me with critical mutual support. That’s what wingmen and teammates do for each other. We have each other’s back. We help each other respond in difficult moments. We provide support and assistance when our teammates need it most. When our heart is racing and the adrenaline is pumping and we’re feeling overwhelmed, a wingman (or teammate) can step in, help us to see the bigger picture, and help us make the best possible decision in a difficult situation.   The other members of my team, my maintenance crew chiefs, Staff Sergeant Ian Morace, and Senior Airman Randy Andrus, were back at our home base waiting for me to return. They were vital in preparing me and my airplane for this mission. We put an incredible amount of trust in our maintenance team, and in return, they don’t want to let us down. They want us to succeed. I am thankful for their expertise and attention to detail in ensuring my jet could fly under any circumstances (even after extensive battle damage). When you trust the members of your team and recognize their expertise, you create an environment where your team can excel. The next AFC CFT - Deep Sensing. I wonder whether the ongoing efforts of the Army’s existing ISR Task Force will align with, or nest under this new CFT? Appears that “deep sensing” is the overarching construct with ISR being one of several potential sub-constructs (with myriad capabilities then aligned accordingly).

Gen Fenton continues to be a measured and insightful message to our legislative and executive branch on the impact of SOF in highly contested environments. Each dollar spent with in the SOF space prepares, protects, and defeats our adversaries while creating stability and safety for our Allies, partners, and those being oppressed. Each dollar spent in SOF is also better spent then large weapon systems or capabilities that do not have actual scoped requirements or an end user in mind. I wonder if you can think of a couple of DoD systems, platforms, or programs that have never lived up to the hype, failed to deliver, were not needed, or not keeping up with innovation. What program would you cut or trim?
