I have just finished the book Cities and Development by Sean Fox and Jo Beall 📚 📚From this book I learned about various perspectives on the dynamic relationship between urbanism and development from a global perspective. 🏙 This book also contains many things such as the relationship between urbanization and development, the role cities play in fostering economic growth in a globalizing world, the complexities of managing urban environments, and the importance of urban planning, governance and politics in shaping city futures. ⁉️ At the end of the chapter in this book also contains many questions for us to think about and discuss together, for example in the last chapter discussing participatory budgeting and several best practices in Brazil, the author creates a guideline of questions to dig deeper into what we read and what we can do and explore more. Some critical points that I get from this book ❗️Sustainable development refers to intervensions that expand real freedoms while taking accpint of long-term environmental consequences and it cab be assessed both at local and global levels. ❗️Governance is a more general term that refers to the relationship between citizens and governments at different level; to ways in which decision that affect society are made and implemented. ❗️Improving essential urban services is incontrovertible, both for reasons of equity, to improve the health and capabilities of the urban poor, as well as to ensure the efficient functioning of cities and urban populations more generally. #UrbanDevelopment #Cities #UrbanPlanning #CityPlanning #Urban

Finally, our paper "Exploring sustainable urban governance: Evolving dynamics, transitions, and ambiguities," is now available online in the Journal of Urban Affairs (ABDC -A, Q1). 📚 The study discusses the reciprocal relationships between sustainability and urban governance. Sustainable urban governance also demands the active participation of multiple stakeholders and incremental, rational transformation of existing policies. Urban management often faces failures due to the irrational or inadequate contextual justification of governance systems and policies. The study proposes a “sustainable urban governance framework” that rationalizes contextual justifications (at the macro-meso-micro and interlevel) by synthesizing the concept of good urban governance, interlinks of sustainability dimensions, and multilevel governance systems. 💡In this study, sustainable urban governance is defined as a "process and system that creates harmonious coexistence among urban settings’ ecological and social strata through integrating rationalized contextual justifications, collective sustainability objectives, and inclusive urban resilience plans." 🔎 Since there has been minimal attempt in the literature to explore sustainable urban governance from multidimensional perspectives, we believe this study will contribute to further investigations and practical implications in the field. Welcoming all comments and suggestions. #sustainableUrbanGovernance #sustainabilityTransition #UrbanManagement #Governance #Urbanpolicies #UrbanGovernance Pls find the full article here👉 https://lnkd.in/gvY66zng

❓ How can the ecosystem services concept be practically applied in urban planning? In this new article, Kate Thompson, Peter Duinker, Kate Sherren, Anders Hayden, and Mikiko Terashima, explore the potential for improving environmental and human health outcomes in cities through the application of the ecosystem services (ES) concept. The study identifies core criteria for the practical fit of the ES concept, emphasizing local relevance and adaptability within current planning approaches. The research suggests that even if these criteria are not met immediately, they may be achieved over time through policy entrepreneurship. Further research in various locations and planning systems would enhance the understanding of the enabling factors for applying ES in urban planning. Exciting new insights alert! 🌟 Dive into our latest article where we explore the intriguing connection between urban shrinkage and degrowth. Together with Antonio Ferreira, Fanny Augis, and Paulo Conceiçao, we examine how urban shrinkage can be the result of economic growth policies and pursuits (and thus further focusing on economic growth can worsen urban shrinkage), using Coimbra, Portugal as our case study. Australia's urban framework is at a cross-road. Almost three-quarters of our population live in cities. Our six main cities are home to 64% of Australia’s population and produce two-thirds of Australia’s economic output. Yet the pressures are growing on our urban environment. Whether it be the cost and availability of housing, the role of the CBD, the provision of social infrastructure, the adoption of smart cities technologies, the provision of public transport, or climate change to name a few. Australian Urban Policy - Prospects and Pathways is a collection of essays, edited by Robert Freestone, Bill Randolph, and Wendy Steele, which offers new ideas that challenge the established orthodoxy around Australian urban policy. Whilst I don't agree with every proposition and pathway proposed to enhance Australia’s urban areas in preparation for the multifaceted challenges ahead, this collection certainly stimulates critical thinking about the policy settings necessary to foster more just, equitable, sustainable, and resilient urban futures. https://lnkd.in/gBkfNHHK Property Council of Australia Urban Taskforce Australia UDIA National Planning Institute of Australia Committee for Sydney ANU Press Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) #cities #urban #transport #publicpolicy

The draft National Urban Policy outlines the Australian government’s goals and objectives to enable our urban areas to be liveable, equitable, productive, sustainable and resilient. The policy will include a shared vision for sustainable growth in our cities and suburbs, developed in partnership with state and territory governments. Principles have been developed to support governments to achieve this vision. #urbanpolicy #consultation #nationalurbanpolicy https://lnkd.in/g_5taJYy

Delight that our article was published in Urban Studies. Collaborative planning practices have recently emerged in China to deal with the complexity and conflicts of interest in urban regeneration. Our study develops a conceptual framework to examine the reasons for initiating collaborative planning, and its processes and outcomes. It also provides empirical evidence of collaborative planning in Chinese urban regeneration. Easy and Smooth Development Before creating an optimal city layout, organizing and improving the city's functions is important to enabling a #prosperous #urban #development, identifying the basic activities, removing investment barriers, streamlining regulations, implementing incentives, attracting capital, and preventing informal activities. These measures contribute to the prosperity of urban life. Urban management should aim to reduce costs and downsizing for optimal efficiency in the city. This can be achieved by minimizing interference in works and project launches, insisting on decision-making for city development, controlling and monitoring programs, and project implementation with consensus and public participation. Additionally, popular groups and civil institutions should be involved in urban development. These mechanisms should be coordinated and compatible to guide urban development effectively. #Prosperous _ Urban _ Development
