Challenging stereotypes! 🏗️🛠️ The construction industry feels like it needs a fresh appeal to today's youth. Those old stereotypes? They're no longer relevant (it's entirely possible they never were) They do continue to influence thinking and outlook though, and if we're to blow them apart, we need to show young teenagers the vast, exciting opportunities within our sector. From cutting-edge engineering to innovative project management, the construction industry is full of fascinating and rewarding careers that go beyond the typical hard hat, high-vis vest and muddy boots image. How ca we do this? 3 thoughts. ✅ Introducing construction topics in schools (the earlier the better) ✅ Engaging through interactive workshops (the earlier the better) ✅ Showcasing modern, tech-driven roles (the earlier the better) I also get the sense that we need to show rather than tell the next generation (and those that influence them). Let this number sink in. Really sink in. According to the National Center for Construction Education & Research, 41% of the construction industry's current workers will be gone by 2031. That's almost half of the experienced workforce walking out the door within the next decade. Laborers, foremen, executives, project managers, and everyone else in between will be leaving behind a massive void of knowledge, expertise, and leadership. This isn't just a few missing hands; it's a huge potential brain drain, but it doesn't have to be. Here's how we can seize this opportunity: 1. Invest in training and apprenticeship programs: We need to make construction careers more accessible and attractive to younger generations. This means offering paid training programs, partnering with schools, and showcasing the diverse and rewarding career paths available in the industry. 2. Embrace technology: Automation and new technologies can help bridge the labor gap and improve efficiency. We need to invest in research and development and encourage construction companies to embrace new tech. 3. Promote diversity and inclusion: The construction industry has a long history of being dominated by men. We need to actively recruit and support women, minorities, and other underrepresented groups to build a more diverse and inclusive workforce. 4. Highlight the benefits: Let's talk about the incredible opportunities in construction. From competitive salaries and benefits to job security and a sense of accomplishment, there's a lot to be excited about in this field! The future of the construction industry is at stake. I find this incredibly relatable. 🌟 This story highlights the universal truth that the pursuit of passion often takes unexpected turns, and success is not always confined by your educational background and work experience. As a Newly qualified Chartered Accountant with audit experience deviating from an audit path can be daunting. I believe that Newly Qualified Chartered Accountants contemplating a shift can draw inspiration from this story.
I hold two degrees in Architecture and haven’t worked a day in my life as an architect 😬 Yet, I managed to carve out a career path for myself in a foreign land ⭐️ Here’s how👇 After spending six excruciating years accomplishing my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Architecture, the next obvious step for me would have been to get a job as an Architect Assistant. 👩🏻🔧 During the final leg of my course, I realized that Architecture was not my passion, but as an Indian international student, dropping out of Uni was not an option, only because I had not seen that happen in my immediate family or society. 😰 So after graduating, there I was on the job market - blindly and cluelessly hunting for jobs. 💼 But in this dark tunnel, there were a few things I was sure of: 💡My experience so far – while in Uni, I had worked part-time as a ‘Finance Assistant’ and a ‘Capital Asset Surveyor.’ This had given me some ‘UK experience,’ making me somewhat relevant in the UK job market. 💡My soft skills - apart from the hard skills Architecture taught me – working with strict deadlines, performing under high pressure, presentation & communication skills, attention to detail, creative thinking, critical thinking, teamwork, and time management. 💡My network - I sent my CV to all my friends and asked them if they could get me in touch with someone in their company or just refer me to a job opening. And guess what… the first job I landed after Uni was through a friend. They got my foot in the door, and I was able to sell my soft skills + relevant experience so far in accordance with the job opening they had. 🤝🏼 And that’s it… one job led to another, and here I am. 🙋🏻♀️ This journey taught me five invaluable lessons: ⭐️ You are not limited to your degree. ⭐️ No work is too small. ⭐️ Optimize your transferable skills. ⭐️ Confidence can really take you places you haven’t even imagined. ⭐️ Your network is everything. This post is for those who feel like they are struggling to find the right career path for themselves and most importantly for those who feel stuck in a job that is just not their passion - You are not limited to anything 🫶🏼🚀 #jobopportunity #careerpath #network #confidence #transferableskills
