Congrats to Team Ebinger for winning a Gold Banner & Student Choice Award! They will be representing Chicago and the Students In Action Youth Summit in September. Reflecting on local students who had lost their battles within the past few years, Team Ebinger felt that supporting pediatric cancer patients would be a way to further support our community as well. Their goals: Bring joy to children who are battling cancer: Team Ebinger collected over 500 items and assembled over 50 gift bags that included items of comfort and need such as blankets, stuffed animals, coloring materials, activity books, personal care items, hats, headscarves, fidgets and small toys. These gift bags were delivered to Advocate Children's hospital and a higher need hospital downtown Chicago. Spread awareness to our school and community about the importance of supporting this cause: Team Ebinger also planned and hosted a pediatric cancer awareness week in which the entire school participated. Each day of the week highlighted a different organization that raises money for cancer awareness. Team members also educated each classroom about the gift item collection and the importance of supporting children who are suffering and included information in our school wide newsletters and social media pages. This team of 24 students, engaged with over 100 volunteers to impact numerous students, school administrators, cancer patients and neighbors. We are entering #givingseason In the world of #nonprofits it is imperative to call on others to share their time, talent, and resources. Nonprofits operate through the generous hearts of individuals, organizations, and corporations. At DiepCFoundation.org we invite those who align with our mission to assist us to carry out our work. For five years we have made presentations at Microsoft This year, I want to personally thank Thomas Fennel and Sanjana Sambur for teaming up to extend our "true outreach and influence" for the #breastcancer community. Huge thanks to Caroline @FruitflyC for her transformative work on facilitating tough conversations with families! Key takeaways: 1. Discussing cancer or cancer risk with children is tough but essential. 2. Starting the conversation is often the hardest part – guidance and reassurance are crucial. 3. Honesty is appreciated by children, who will ask questions, sometimes in unexpected situations. 4. Several organisations offer resources, support, and training, not just for parents but also for HCPs! The cost of cancer treatment in the US is exorbitant. Families struggle to not only afford medical expenses, but also their basic needs like food and housing. Patients who should be joining clinical trials often can't afford the added costs of transportation and new housing. Family Reach is a nonprofit addressing the financial difficulties of cancer, providing financial assistance and other resources to cancer patients for non-medical expenses. CHANGING THE WAY MEN GO THROUGH CANCER Man Up to Cancer inspires men to connect and avoid isolation during their cancer journeys. As North America’s leading support community for men impacted by cancer, we offer peer-to-peer support, an annual retreat, chemo backpack program, learning opportunities, and more than 30 local chapters geared toward improving the quality of life of our members. When faced with cancer, women tend to “reach out,” and men tend to “check out.” This leads men down the path toward mental health problems, strained relationships, and poor medical outcomes. It’s time for a new path. We are changing what it means to “Man Up.” It’s not just about being tough. It means having the courage to accept help, and knowing we are smarter and stronger as a pack than we are as lone wolves. As one who was not in a good place dealing with my own cancer journey.
