In fact, it’s particularly important for unmarried couples­—including same-sex unmarried couples and cohabitating couples—to organize their assets strategically via the estate-planning process, as they face unique financial challenges that are not protected by the structure of marriage. Around 20 years ago, Massachusetts became the first US state to legalize same-sex marriage. With many states following suit in the subsequent years, in 2015, the Supreme Court ruled in Obergefell v. Hodges the right for same-sex couples to marry nationwide. A new study from BCG reveals that extending financial benefits to same-sex married couples has not only supported families but also provided a major boost to the US economy. On average, married same-sex couples have a net worth that's over $130,000 higher than their unmarried peers. They’ve already contributed $125 billion to the economy, and projections show they’ll add another $300 billion by 2043. Beyond the economic impact, research highlights that same-sex married couples report feeling happier and more satisfied with life. It’s truly a win on multiple levels.
