Why do we fear difficult conversations so much? Because they are loaded with emotions, illogical opinions, inexperience, bad memories, guilt, doubts and second-guesses as well as fear. Avoidance does not work. Here’s what does: ✅ 1 — Prepare what you want to say to them ✅ 2 — Brainstorm what they might want to say to you ✅ 3 — Take a couple of days to reflect — What’s true? What’s important? ✅ 4 — Reach out and make your intention clear Say/Ask, “I want this to be better. How should we approach this?” ✅ 5 — Line up a short meeting to align only on intentions and share ideas for a way forward together ✅ 6 — Tell them you’ve been reflecting on how they might be feeling (no need to share specifics just yet) ✅ 7 — If all you achieve in that first meeting is aligning on intentions, that’s a win! I’ll be so glad when... Running my human capital consulting business and taking care of aging parents as a new grandpa, I tend to have one of two gut responses to making personal plans.
