🔥 Just finished the book 7 Rules of Power by Stanford Professor Jeffrey Pfeffer, and it’s a wake-up call for anyone serious about influence and leadership. 🔥 If you think “staying humble” or “waiting your turn” will naturally bring success, Pfeffer flips that idea on its head. Power isn’t about title or ego; it’s a skill set – and it can be learned. Here are the big takeaways every leader should keep in mind: 1️⃣ Visibility Over Modesty Hard truth: working hard and hoping people notice isn’t a strategy. Pfeffer drives home the point that visibility counts more than quiet effort. Making your work seen, and occasionally showing off, makes a bigger impact than we often give ourselves permission to think. 2️⃣ Dare to Break the Rules Success doesn’t always follow the safe path. It comes to those who push boundaries (smartly). This doesn’t mean recklessness; it means choosing courage over conformity when it counts. Playing by the book may make us comfortable, but it rarely makes us memorable. 3️⃣ Master Self-Promotion and Branding If your work is valuable, it deserves to be shared - period. Self-promotion has a bad reputation, but done well, it’s about helping people see how you can add value. And if you don’t show them, they won’t know. 💡 Final Thought: Power Is a Responsibility, Not a Trophy Pfeffer challenges the idea that power corrupts. Power, when wielded as a tool for impact (rather than ego), drives change. It’s about influencing outcomes, not basking in authority. This shift makes power a means to real growth, not a destination. So here’s my takeaway: Building influence takes intentionality and boldness. Pfeffer doesn’t give you a pass to be timid; he offers a toolkit for showing up in a bigger way. Here’s why you need to get out of your silo When people look at my career, some think I pivoted from one thing to the next with no plan. It was never like that. I have always thrived on being broad, but having sufficient detail to connect to a topic, and importantly, to know who to go to for real depth. I am a proud general manager. In our silo driven world I’ve never seen research that suggested that was a good thing until now. What ‘Range’ by David Epstein highlights, that I find eye-opening is that in a world of continuing uncertainty it is the generallists that have the stronger chance to solving problems, or recognising and helping, where specialists may be limited to recognizing patterns they’ve seen before. As a leader, developing myself and my teams, or a mum helping her kids experience things to prepare for a future world, this book reinforces my belief of two things 1) Variety is indeed the spice of life and 2) Allowing people to learn in different environments boost their resilience and adaptability. 2) Leaders should surround themselves with great people, who can access the depth so they themselves keep ability to see the bigger picture. Food for thought on talent development, and a great endorsement of the power of acquired diversity. I really recommend this book if you’re considering trying some thing new or changing your field.
