On this International Day of Older Persons, EMF highlights Dr Elizabeth (EJ) Marsden's research, supported by an EMF Leading Edge grant, on the Older Persons Emergency Network (OPEN) model, formerly known as the Residential Aged Care District Assessment and Referral Rapid Response (RADAR RR). As Australia’s population ages, emergency department (ED) presentations by residents from aged care homes are increasing. Traditional EDs often struggle to meet their unique needs, resulting in unnecessary investigations and prolonged stays. Dr Marsden's research evaluates the OPEN model, which delivers pre-hospital care equivalent to ED services at residents’ homes, with support from Queensland Ambulance Service and Metro North Health. This study aims to assess clinical and cost outcomes, providing insights into effective care structures and processes to improve patient care while determining economic efficiency. The findings will contribute to the development of a toolkit to guide other health services in adopting this innovative model and support geriatric emergency medicine research. Mount Sinai has expanded its Center for Post-COVID Care—the first and largest center of its kind—to another location to better serve patients in #EastHarlem and the #SouthBronx. The new site will help meet the needs of a growing number of patients with long-term symptoms from #COVID-19 needing access to world-leading care. It will also enhance #longCOVID care for minority populations living in underserved communities who have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19, but underdiagnosed with long COVID. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3S6gbgd “The South Bronx and East Harlem communities were some of the hardest hit during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Long COVID is likely much more prevalent than many realize in this population and we know it can be extremely debilitating. We know these patients are out there—now it’s a matter of reaching them and getting them the care they need,” says Rachel Engelberg, MD, Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, who cares for patients at the new site. The NHS Race & Health Observatory, in partnership with IHI and supported by The Health Foundation, has established an innovative 15-month, peer-to-peer Learning and Action Network (LAN) to address the gaps seen in severe maternal morbidity, perinatal mortality and neonatal morbidity between women of different ethnic groups. Pedro Delgado, vice president at IHI, added, "The aspiration is to accelerate the pace of improvement, partner closely with mothers and families, foster collaboration across the system and use the intensive learning with these teams to inform approaches to scale up and spread impactful changes over time that will reduce harm, suffering, and improve outcomes." 📣 Calling all members - our next #iHVInsights webinar is on 25 April 'Not just pink, blue and yellow: assessing ethnically diverse babies'. Remarkably, there has been minimal exploration into whether existing guidelines for assessing newborns’ health are suitable for Black, Asian, or minority ethnic babies. This includes crucial assessments such as interpreting the Apgar score’s component examining skin colour, as well as evaluating conditions like jaundice and cyanosis. Our panel of experts, drawing from both professional expertise and lived experiences, will delve into the complex interplay of race, ethnicity, and skin tone in these critical neonatal assessments. There will be opportunity for discussion on how these insights can inform health visiting practices, research and policy changes, toward fostering a more equitable healthcare landscape. Join us as we embark on a journey toward creating inclusive and anti-racist healthcare environments for all infants. Book your free member place here: https://buff.ly/3IU0sM4 Not an iHV Member?
