Great example of what is possible with government collaboration and broader partnerships! Congrats to Habitat for Humanity Greater Ottawa and great to see Minister Paul Calandra getting a first hand tour. Affordable and attainable homeownership IS possible in all our communities. Here are 5 levers that governments could deploy to help us do more ... -- Exempt non-profit ownership homes like those we build at Habitat for Humanity from HST/GST. -- Provide access for non-profit ownership projects to the low cost financing that is available for affordable rental. -- Increase the per door funding from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) Société canadienne d'hypothèques et de logement(SCHL) for non-profit affordable ownership homes. -- Introduce time-limited (eg. next 5 years?) tax incentives for philanthropic donations to shelter-based charities. -- Provide a fund available to pre-qualified affordable housing providers to enable them to buy "firesale" condos that are likely to become available over the next couple of years and that could be redeployed for affordable housing.
