In the coming weeks, there is likely to be a spike in Assistant Psychologist job vacancies as those successful in their Doctorate applications leave their posts. Applying for these jobs can be a daunting task so I thought I would write a wee post with all of my top tips! Note: These are all tips that worked for me so take them with a grain of salt. 💼 Preparing Experience: Since AP posts are so competitive, you often need to evidence your skills through work experience in other jobs. I recommend at least 6 months in jobs such as Support Worker, Teaching Assistant, Research Assistant, Health Care Assistant etc. It is ideal if you work with a population that you would then want to work with as an AP (like children). Finally, take the time to appreciate and learn from these jobs along your journey! As an AP, so much of my practice is inspired and informed by my learning as a Support Worker and Teaching Assistant! Visas: Ensure you have the right to work in the UK and can evidence this. Some NHS trusts do sponsor visas but as far as I know, this has only been to retain existing APs rather than when recruiting new APs. 🔍 Searching Where: If applying for AP posts within the NHS, look no further than NHS Jobs (jobs.nhs.uk & jobs.scot.nhs.uk) as this will advertise all NHS AP posts. If you are widening your search to include private providers, then you may choose to use websites such as LinkedIn and Indeed. Service: Depending on your work experience, interests, and background, you may wish to narrow down your search to a specific population such as children, older adults or addiction services. Applying for posts that match your experience will give you a better chance at securing an interview and consequently a job; but don’t let it limit you if you are super passionate about working with a specific population! 📝 Applying The main focus of the application lies in the ‘Supporting Information’ section. Here you are asked to outline how you have met the published job description and person specification. (Unless they have specifically asked you to answer a question in the job advert!) There is no set way to format this section, but as a minimum, I would recommend you cover most of the essential and desirable criteria by providing reflective examples of how you have demonstrated these skills and qualities. Furthermore, it is extremely important to demonstrate that you have researched the NHS Trust and/or Team that you are applying for. You can do this by incorporating the trust values into your personal statement and evidencing these with further reflection. Overall, I would prepare a personal statement that is succinct, reflective and that contains key words from the person specification. Since the employer is likely to be reading several applications, I would limit it to around 800 words. You can save words by adding details about your past jobs in the work experience section rather than repeating it in your personal statement. All the best!

I HAVE BEEN ON LINKEDIN FOR 3YEARS....but, I have only had a few viral posts. Getting 100likes daily on my posts is always a miracle. It looks like my connections were chosen all wrong because I didn't fully understand how this place worked in my first year. I never have enough time to engage all those who engage on my posts. I even struggle to find time to write my posts each day.That 30 minutes is nearly always impossible till I squeeze it out. This is why I always tell young people that come to me for linkedin mentorship- Maximize your singleness and build your brand on linkedin. There will be a day when... ---When your life and actions are determined by your spouse and children. ---When your 24hours is no longer yours to fully use. ---When business and workplace challenges will nearly make you forget the online world exists. INTENTIONALITY is the only thing that kept me over the past few years.
