(My role looked like this) - Make 100 calls a day - Mass email everyone - Send unlimited invites - Script was the same Now, it's completely different... - Educate at scale - Wear a marketing hat - Look for intent signals - Hyper targeted strategy - Make strategic outreach - Subject matter expertise - Company wide alignment - Leverage channels that scale - Adapt script based on market The BDR role is going through a massive transition. That was actually really fun. In the last 2 weeks, I met with 8 job seekers looking for positions ranging from BDR to AE up to sales management. The biggest recurring theme that emerged was differentiating from the pool of candidates. The standard application process is like hoping to nail a shot from half-court. Unless you're Payton Pritchard, your chances of success are just too low (clearly still riding high from Monday 🏀 ☘ ). Collectively, we brainstormed some strategies that do work, and help to showcase relevant skills, experiences and also express genuine interest in the role. Thought I'd drop a few here in case anyone could benefit... 1.) Does the company offer a free trial? If so, sign up! Use the product, compile your feedback, and come to the conversation with some perspective on the values of the solution or product-specific questions. Bonus points if you also download a competitor's product and offer that perspective as well. 2.) Why wait until you have an offer for the reference check? Ask 4-5 people in your network to provide a referral and compile it nicely in a PDF you can include in your application. Drop it in the cover letter section which is usually optional and goes unused 65% of the time (according to Jobvite). 3.) For BDR's, proactively share a sequence you created to show you know the company's messaging and personas. With the right prompt in ChatGPT or Perplexity, you can easily create a sequence that shows you get it. 4.) Don't be shy with outreach. Find 3 tiers of contacts you can contact to express interest in the position and ask to learn more. For an AE role, this might be a tenured AE, a VP of Sales and a member of the talent team. Will they take a call? Eh, probably not. But, if the VP of sales pings the recruiter to take a look at your application, guess who just moved to the top of the pile? 5.) Send a thank you note. OK, this is such an easy one. But after conducting dozens of interviews over the last couple of years I'm shocked how few candidates do this. I think creativity is one of the most under-appreciated aspects of good salesmanship. Are you following a standard playbook, or are you enhancing it? The best sales pros I've worked with aren't just the ones that routinely hit their number. They are the ones who constantly go above and beyond and seek new ways to break through.
